The theory of evolution is a mechanical explanation for how life and the diversity of species came into being. Evolutionary theory is the basis for much of modern science and with out it, it is doubtful that many of the advances we have mad in the last century would have been possible.
As a working explanation of the origin of species, it is the best scientific explanation there is. Creationist who would disagree based on the fact that the system is too complex to have just evolved without the presence of "design" should look to other complex systems that lack a designer, such as economies or the stuck market.
To those who would disagree based on the argument that there are no examples of evolution today, the diversity within the human specie provides a quick rebuttal. Darker skinned populations are distributed towards the equator and lighter skinned populations are concentrated in the northern hemisphere. The evolutionary explanation is that natural selection favored the traits that contributed to survival in these areas based on the level of solar radiation. There are many other striking examples of observable diversification, which is apparently caused by environmental stimuli. The ways in which bacteria will adapt to an antibiotic or that the AIDS virus continues to defy a cure by its constant mutation are such examples.
These examples and others are simpler to explain from a logical stand point based on the observable and testable forces of the natural world than they are by attributing them to divine power or by saying that we don't really know simply because we don't accept the evolutionary explanation that has been given.
The fact is we do know quite a lot about life and the world around us. We have formulated fairly logical explanations for many of the natural phenomena that we deal with. We have come a long way from thinking that people get sick because of witches to discovering the existence of microbes and finding cures to diseases based on this knowledge.
There appear to be rational explanations for everything in the natural world weather they have been found yet of not. Thus, the notion that there has to be a God who created all things and continues to order all things like some pan-cosmic little kid watching his ant farm is pretty foolish and understandable ridiculed by much of the scientific community.
The endless battle between those who insist that this idea of God is needed to explain reality and those who have found more logical explanations appears
