Cutting your bangs is simple and requires no specialist knowledge, expertise, or instruments. All you need is a pair of good, sharp scissors, which are not too long in the length, a mirror, and a fine-toothed comb.
While you may be tempted to wash your hair before cutting your bags, after all, that's the way they do it in the salon, remember that they are professionals and know what they're doing. You, on the other hand, will probably benefit by keeping your hair dry because that way you won't have to judge how your hair will look after you've taken an inch or so off it and it's dried. Hair always looks longer when it's wet, so if you cut your bangs after having just washed or wet your hair, you may go a little too far with cutting it and then get a rather unpleasant surprise when it's dried!
To cut your bangs, first, pull your hair back from your face and secure it behind your head with a band or similar, leaving your bangs ready to be cut. Comb your bangs so they are free of any tangles and your hair is lying as flat as it naturally can against your forehead. Section your bangs into three. Start with the middle section. Pull the hair forward and hold in-between your first and middle fingers at an angle. Cut the hair. Do the same to the other two sections of hair. You will have more success if you opt for a casual style of bangs as opposed to a precise blunt cut, which will be much more difficult to execute correctly. When trimming your bangs, keep in mind the advice that's always offered to DIY-ers when it comes to cutting wood: always cut less than you think you need to cut, because it's much easier to take more off than it is to put it back on!
If you want a feather effect on your bangs, then snip tiny wedges from the front of your hair, keeping the scissors at a vertical angle.
If your bangs are in need of reshaping or the thickness of your bangs needs some adjusting, then this is a job that's probably best left to the professionals. And talking of professionals, your hairdresser should be more than willing to trim your bangs for you free of charge, if you visit him or her on a regular basis. One word of warning though, if you've been wearing your bangs long and have decided to go for bangs, consider whether bangs will suit your face shape, particularly if you have a short, or square or round, face. Wearing bangs could make your face appear shorter which might not give you the best look.
