Thoughts on the age of consent

by Cray Sellars

I think the age of consent should be eighteen years old. Men and women are old enough to go to war for the United States and lose their limbs or life. Women are generally considered grown by the time they reach age eighteen. They are considered to be more mature than men at age eighteen. I don't know who came up with that belief.

Men and women usually graduate high school by the time they reach the age of eighteen. Both men and women are old enough to operate a vehicle at the age of eighteen. Their bodies are mature enough to reproduce children at age eighteen.

How can we tell young adults they are ready to go out into the real world after they graduate but they aren't old enough to have sex? How can we tell them they are responsible enough to go off to college after graduation but they aren't responsible enough to have sex? I do think they should be taught aboutthe risks of sexually transmitted diseases and using protection. I also think they should be taught about abstinence and being in a committed and long term relationship.

Young adults should be taught that sex should take place between two adults that really love each other. If I had a child I would want them to at least wait till thay were eighteen before having sex. I would inform them of the consequnces of their actions. They should be prepared to take care of a child if someond accidentally got pregnant.

I don't know if congress decides the age of consent or someone else does. The age of consent plays an important part in statutory rape laws. The laws determine whether someone is charged for sleeping with a person younger than he or she. I think the age of consent should definitely be higher than sixteen and lower than twenty-one years old. Sixteen is way too young to be having or even thinking about having sexual intercourse. I think that twenty-one should definitely be old enough to make these kind of decisions. My parents were married by the time they were twenty-one years old.

I know this is a new age. My parents have been married for over thirty years.I would be curious to hear what they would have to say on the subject. I bet they would pretty much feel the same as I do. I think nowadays children grow up too fast. They want to date at an early age and dress like adults. They also deal with more issues than I had to deal with as a child.

I think society is part of the problem with underage sex. Commercials on television are full of sexual content and so are movies. It makes cchildren curious about what all the fuss is aboout.
