How to remove carpet

Removing carpets can be a time consuming chore, but from a financial standpoint, definitely worth the effort and exertion. When we purchased our first home, the inside needed to be completely redone. One of the most important things we did was to prep the floors for our contractors to come in and install new and updated carpet and flooring products. It was not our intention to fix and resell, as many people do these days in order to gain cash by flipping. Instead, our intention was to retire and live the rest of our lives out on our 'dream property'. As such, what was done inside made a big difference to us. Carpet tools were not a part of our arsenal as we began. We had no carpet extractor as we quickly realized that these carpets were far beyond any help that even the best quality carpet extractor with all of the related carpet tools would help.

Our new home was built in 1980 and had been used harshly throughout at least the most recent five to ten years. This was reflected in the many carpets throughout the home. We began in the room we thought would be the easiest - the living room. The carpet in place was an outdated, well worn and badly abused carpet that had definitely seen better days. In it's place, we intended to put a tightly woven, short napped shag. I could hardly wait. As soon as we arrived, I headed to this room and began carefully removing the baseboards. I set these aside in case they could be refinished and reused at a later date, but as it turned out, none of them were salvageable. Once the baseboards had been carefully pried from the walls with a screwdriver, I grabbed a corner of the carpet and pulled. That was the beginning.

The carpet itself came up easily enough. In fact, in some places, it released it's hold on the floor too easily, tearing in our hands as we attempted to roll and pull it our of our new house. It was rotten, and surrendered with only minimal argument, but underneath we were in for some unpleasant surprises. The carpet had been abused by several pets, and the smell that assaulted us as soon as we began to remove it was unbelievable. It tore in some of the more seriously worn places, presumably in front of where the couch had been, and in front of the door, but once we managed to get it rolled up and out of the house, we moved on to the next stage which we found to be equally unpleasant. All of this was done without the use of any proper carpet tools or carpet extractors, although they may have made the job easier. We
