Consumers are faced with a dizzying array of options when purchasing an mp3 player. These choices break down into a few basic categories. Consider how you intend to use a music player before you buy one and you will be much happier with your purchase.
How Big?
You can find out the minimum mp3 player size that you need simply by looking at the size of the folder on your computer in which you've placed your music collection. If, however, this is your first foray into to world of digital music, you'll need to estimate how much music you really have.
To do this, count the number of compact discs (CDs) you would like to add. An average CD, with a dozen songs, holds about fifteen megabytes (MB) of music. With 1,000 MB per gigabyte ("gig"), that comes out to over sixty standard albums per gig of memory.
Keep in mind that you will add more music as time passes, so purchase an mp3 player with more memory that you currently need. Knowing how much space your current collection requires will prevent you from spending an extra $50 to $100, or more, on a piece of equipment with too much storage for your needs.
You can also buy a smaller, less expensive model that accepts memory cards. These allow you unlimited space but less convenience, as your music collection gets fragmented across those cards. Equipment failure won't wipe out your entire collection, however, and you can use the cards to organize songs in whatever way you like.
What Will It Do?
You can find mp3 players that perform a wide variety of functions. Many cell phones now play mp3s, as well as taking photos and recording video. If you already carry a phone, CDs, and a digital camera with you, these are your best bet.
Should you prefer a simple player that will be used only for listening to music, however, you can find much less expensive alter natives, often in the four- and eight-gigabyte range or even one to two gigs. These smaller players work perfectly for storing the upbeat music you need for your workout and are often physically smaller than their roomier cousins, as well.
What Accessories Are Available?
Decide to what use you will put your new mp3 player. Will you play the music in your car? Do you want to plug it into some speakers and enjoy your music at home? Will you need a case to protect it from scratches and dings as you wear it on your belt or carry it in your bag?
Consider where, when, and how you will be using your new player. Then research the availability of the accessories that will let you do so. For some brands, you can buy a wide variety of accessories to meet all of your needs. Knowing what you can do with a particular piece of equipment will help you choose which brand to buy. Remember to check on recharging capabilities, if you will use your device often.
Doing some homework on how the various brands and sizes of mp3 players work will save you money. Knowing what to check will save you time, too. Choosing a player that does just what you need, and nothing more, will save you frustration and make it easier to enjoy your music.
