When it comes to search engine marketing, it is a hard thing to do even though the search results come up in fractions of seconds. This is due to both the person who is trying to market their product or site and the person who is looking for those types of products or sites.
When it comes to a product that you may want to sell or get people to pay attention to, you have to be able to find out if that type of product has a place online and if there is a large enough interest in that type of product by doing research based on other possible names of the product and/or similar products if any that may already be out there so you can find out if you can effectively market the product online for the search engines to pick up on. After that it becomes how the product is named, how you word the description for the product and it would have to be full of keywords that the various search engines would pick up on that would allow for a prominent role in the search results.
It would also not hurt to pay for advertisements even if it means having to go with contextual advertisements that places like Google and Yahoo have that would be put on the search results page and that could be visible on a search result page even if your site doesn't show up in the actual results as long as the wording of the search engine thinks that your ad is in relation to the keyword search.
To some degree someone who isn't selling a product but rather promoting their website even if it is a personal blog, they have to think like they are selling a product, this is due to the fact that they are still selling something but it is stuff they want to talk about or things they want to share on a personal level. In essence you still have to act like someone in marketing which is due to the fact you are marketing yourself to bring people in to read your articles or view your accomplishments and even to view you photo albums that you wish the be viewed by others. This too would include having to do research into the wording so that you have strategic wording that is based on popular keywords out there that people use both on a personal and professional level
You can still by advertising space like you would do for the website for a product but where you are not selling a product it would not be cost effective to do so unless you are able to recoup the cost in some way like using empty space to put advertisements on your site as long as the company that hosts your site permits such usage from its users.
