Beginner's guide to GPS devices

Some people are blessed with the ability to be able to find their way around strange surroundings or cities with ease. These people never seem to get lost. But for the rest of us who struggle to just navigate within the confines of our own towns, having the feeling of being lost is no fun at all. This can present problems with taking vacations or dropping into a new city to conduct business.

But miracle devices such as the GPS (global positioning system) is just what the doctor ordered for anyone who wants to take the worry out of going to different destinations or finding places they want to go to. These electronic marvels can literally guide you to any place you can think of. They are, for the most part, easy to use and very reliable. But there are so many different ones out there that it can cause some buyer's anxiety for new comers to the GPS world.

Selecting the right one can be quite intimidating. Some GPS units have lots of buttons while others just have a touch screen. Added to the confusion of which one is best for you are the various features that each one has. The prices seem to vary from the inexpensive to the over the top range.

The first thing to do is to consider only name brand GPS devices. There are products out there that are less expensive but don't be fooled by the low price. The big companies that have been in the business of GPS manufacturing for many years make a better and more reliable product. So before you commit to buying one, make sure you get an idea of what the different GPS companies are selling and do some price comparisons.

The basic function of a GPS is to get you from "here" to "there" with as little effort on your part as possible. Every good GPS unit can do this basic function but special features can make the difference between struggling with your GPS and pulling your hair out to making the trip an enjoyable one.

One of the features that are highly recommended is to have a real text voice function in your GPS. All GPS units can tell you when and where to turn, but the more advanced ones can actually pronounce the streets or freeway entrances in real English for you. You may save some money by going the old route of having the voice prompt simply say, "Turn right in 4 miles," but having the unit say "Turn right at Lincoln Street in 4 miles" is more helpful and accurate. This also serves to keep your eyes on the road instead of constantly checking the LCD screen to see if you are on the right road or not.
