Each day we live in a country so free
Where speaking your mind is encouraged
Where even those born in the gutter
Can one day have the chance to shine among the stars
So when it comes to our flag
The symbol of our pride in this nation
It makes sense that we should take a day
To really consider what it means to us all
Flowing valiantly in the breeze
From silver poles, rooftops, or car antennas
Plastered on t-shirts, mugs, and swimming suits
And praised in song and story
Even today as we find ourselves in this hateful war
That many of us could hardly agree with
That has torn families apart and
Lost many a love
We cannot help but look to our flag in awe
For it represents so much more than the state of the nation
As it waves, it speaks of a dream and a legacy
That no one can erase
Deep crimson stripes flowing across it's surface
Red, the color of passion and fire
Tell the world that we are a country of people
That can do anything we set our minds to
Red, like the blood shed on our soil and off
Reminds us of the lives lost for our nation
Both off at war and at home
In the revolution and today
And let us not forget the Native Americans
Who bled deep into their soil
Or the African slaves brought from their homes
That built a culture from their bondage
The red twists with the white
A color that symbolizes hope and justice
It reminds us of what our nation accomplished
By simply having a dream of freedom for all
From Dr. King to those early pioneers
That settled this land in the name of freedom
From the first man on the moon to the Statue of Liberty
All show the power of our nations dream
That everyone should have the opportunity
To live, learn, grow, and love equally
That anyone can be anything
In a nation where we have the right to choose
Deep blue graces our flag's corner
The color of wisdom and truth
Illustrating our nations hope for the future
That they may learn from the mistakes of today
That they may take what they see and effect a change
On this nation, this United States of America
Using the knowledge they've gained along the way
To prepare for a better tomorrow
Our flag stands as a symbol of all we believe
So powerful, that even its destruction
Illustrates these basic American principles
As it goes up in a blaze of glory
So on this Flag Day and everyday
Take a moment to think about its power
Assuring us that while today may be clouded
There is always a promise of a better future
