My hairdresser always knows when I've cut my own bangs. For this reason, I'll say right off the bat, the best way to cut your bangs, is to go to your hairdresser and have them do it. I'm not saying you need to spend $50 on a haircut every three to four weeks. Most hairdressers will cut JUST your bangs for $5. You don't even have to go to your own hairdresser. If you are out and about and walk by a hairdresser (they are everywhere!)run in, and say, "I would like JUST my bangs cut. Will you do it for $5." Someone there will say yes!
If you MUST cut your own bangs, I totally understand. I've been there myself. Once I hacked off the unruly locks with a tiny pair of eyebrow scissors in a hotel room on my way to a concert. They HAD TO GO. They were poking my eyes and drying out my contact lenses! It was an emergency! My hair didn't look half bad - I THOUGHT - but two weeks later my hairdresser asked me "You cut your own bangs AGAIN?". Well, WHATEVER! It had to be done. I was BLIND!
Bang cutting techniques for dummies:
1)For the straight look - think Betty Page - comb your bangs straight, take a strip of Scotch Tape and put it UNDER where you want your bangs to end. This sounds stupid but is extremely efficient. Take your scissors and cut above the tape line. Perfect straight bangs every time. Another plus, you don't have to worry about cutting off too much because you've already measured length with the tape!
2)For the lopsided punk look - follow the above directions, only angle the tape diagonally from one of your temples down to mid-eye on the other side of your face. You'll only be able to see from one eye - but you'll look cute.
3)For a wispy look - wet your bangs slightly, and one small hunk at a time, sheer off the end of each hunk. Do this until you can see straight. Be careful not to cut off too much.
4)To thin unruly thick bangs. Brush the top layer of your bangs back over your head. Hold them there with a clip or headband. Wet the remaining bangs and cut them to the desired length. The desired length should be the longest you want your newly cut bangs to be. Drop the top layer of your bangs back onto your forehead. Starting at the middle and working out to each side, cut the top layer of your bangs shorter than the bottom later. Don't sheer the top layer in a straight line, instead take a few pinches at a time and cut them uniformly. However, do not cut any strands too short, or they'll just stick out and look silly! Like a porcupine!
I think I'll stop there! Anything more fancy then the styles above should not be attempted by any but a trained professional! Seriously folks, it's only $5 to get your bangs cut any way you want them professionally!
While I realize that any mistake you make will grow out in about a months time (two if you are really hopeless with the scissors!), do you really want to look ridiculous for that long?
