So Washington decided to throw money at millions of Americans in an effort to stimulate our economy. A great idea at first glance. But there are hidden dangers and things that must be taken into account in order for this money to truly stimulate our economy.

It's true we are now in a global marketplace. Let's face it, the stores are filled nearly to capacity with products made in foreign lands. The overwhelming majority of these items are made in China. That is an economy that needs no additional stimulation.

For that reason, it is imperative that the American people spend their money wisely. Just going out and buying a few hundred dollars' worth of clothes, electronics, or other doo-dads won't help America if they're made elsewhere. It might be difficult to find products 'Made in the USA' but since this is money that's been given to us in the hope of stimulating the economy at home, we should hold onto the money until we find American-made products that are worthy of American dollars.

What is my family going to do with our check? First of all, go to the GM dealership and get some needed repairs done to one of our vehicles. Talk about supporting America, using American parts to extend the life of our American-made car.

And what about the rest of the money? We'll be putting that aside in the bank until we find some American-made products for our home. I'm thinking about using the remainder of the funds to attend some of the summer Art Fairs. It would be nice to support local artisans with this money. In a rather convoluted way, it's kind of like supporting the arts without the controversy that usually surrounds an endowment.

But if you decide to go the Art Fair/Craft Show route, be diligent and don't be afraid to check the items. I've actually found artisans who have objects in their booth that are store-bought and displaying the Made in China' label. Again, all that does is stimulate the economy of a country that has acted irresponsibly with no thought to consequences. Do you remember the lead-tainted toys and the recall of millions of articles last summer? What about the poisoned pet food? Need I elaborate that further?

So to sum up, will the economic stimulus package work? In theory it can work, but only if we all remember to Buy American with our windfall. Please remember the words of a bumper sticker I see on cars all around our area: "Out of a Job Yet? Keep Buying Foreign!"
