If you are thinking about installing new carpet, you will want to make sure to check out all of the different types of carpet padding in order to choose the one that will be best for your situation. All types of carpets require their own special kind of padding, so make sure to ask a professional carpet dealer which type of padding that you should use with the type of carpet that you purchase.

Foam Padding

Foam carpet padding is made from urethane foam. It is available in multiple thicknesses and densities. Most of the time, you will find that this type of carpet padding is referred to as prime foam. This type of padding should never be used for heavy traffic. If it is used in a high traffic area, the movement of space between the carpet and the padding will cause the backing to break down.

Waffle Rubber

Many times this type of carpet padding is used in the wrong way. If the padding is rating less than 90 ounces, it will never stand up against the plastic backing on most carpets that you will use today. The binders that hold the padding together is also made of clay that will inevitably break down with use.

Rebond

Rebond is a type of carpet padding that is made from foam scrap. The price of this type of foam varies depending on the availability of the material. This the most common type of carpet padding used in the flooring industry. The padding comes in different densities and thicknesses, and the density is related to the pounds per cubic foot. You will want to use a density of at least 5 pounds and a thickness of 3/8 inch for light traffic, and a little more for heavy traffic.

Slab Rubber

If you want to get one of the best types of carpet padding on the market, you will want to check out slab rubber. Slab rubber will put up with the heaviest traffic and still last a long time. This is because unlike waffle rubber, there are no large ripples of air to get in the way. Slab rubber padding will resists furniture indentations and crushing.

Fiber
This type of carpet padding is used when you want to limit the movement of the carpet that is laid on top. These types of pads are best used for area rugs, commercial carpets, and some types of Berber carpets. You will want to e right density in order to have fiber carpet padding work correctly.

Berber Pad

For some types of Berber carper, you will need special padding. The carpet dealer that you work with will be able to tell you if you need special padding for your Berber carpet or not. Remember that rebond should never be used under a Berber.

There will be times when special circumstances come up. There are various types of carpets that will need special pads under the. For example, a woven carpet will need to be installed over a super dens fiber pad or heavy flat foam. Commercial installation will also run into these special circumstances, depending on what your needs are. If you want to make sure that you have the right padding for the right situation, make sure to talk to the carpet professional that you are buying from in order to get the best material for the job.
