Many people do not realize that there are some basic guidelines that should be followed when being interviewed for a potential job.
As soon as you get the interview time and date, write it down and make sure to clear your day so that you will not be hurried or overly stressed on the day of the interview.
Next you should make sure you have an up to date resume' and cover letter to bring with you on the day of the interview, even if you have already submitted one. This adds to the overall impression of preparedness that you should be attempting to cultivate.
Make sure to do some preliminary research into what it is that your potential employer does. This may give you an added edge if you are asked any job specific questions, or it may give you basis to ask some questions of your own.
Another thing you should do ahead of time is get directions to the interview site. It also wouldn't be a bad idea to drive to the site to make sure you won't get lost on the day of the interview.
On the day of the interview you should allow youself plenty of time to get ready, as well as plenty of time for travel to the interview site. Make sure to be well groomed. This means being clean shaven or a neat beard for the guys, as well as having some sort of neat and clean cut hairstyle for both guys and gals. As far as dress goes, you should only wear conservative buisness attire. This to some extent depends on the type of job for which you are applying, but you can NEVER be overdressed for a job interview. Guys should always wear at least a shirt and tie, but a buisness suit is better. Gals have a little bit more lattitude, but conservative and professional should be the rule here.
Make sure to arrive at the interview site no later than fifteen minutes prior to the scheduled interview time. If you are required to wait, make sure to sit or stand using good posture in order to present the most professional appearance possible.
When is is finally time to start your interview, make sure to shake hands firmly if possible with your interviewer and introduce yourself. Have your resume' and cover letter ready. During the interview make sure to listen attentively. When you are asked a question, take a moment to consider your answer, then answer in a clear and concise manner. Try to answer the question completely, but be sure not to ramble on needlessly. Don't forget to maintain good posture!
Once your interviewer is finished asking you questions, he or she will probably ask you if you have any questions. Try to ask two or three questions if possible, but don't get carried away. At the end of the interview make sure to thank your interviewer and shake his or her hand firmly. Give he or she a copy of you resume' and cover letter if you have not done so already.
Now is the time to congratulate yourself on an interview well done! Remember that interviewers expect job applicants to be nervous to some extent, so you shouldn't worry about this needlessly. Another important point to remember is that there may be many applicants applying for just one available position, so you should not be too hard on yourself if you do not get the job.
If you follow these simple steps you will be well on your way to getting that job that you deserve!
