Bless the men and women who carry those badges and protect us. Everyone has an off day even a police man.
Several Christmas' ago my husband and I were driving through town with our two children when low and behold we saw the wonderful flashing lights. I turned to my husband and said, "Oh that figures. Stupid cop." It was not a nice thing to say but considering the day and the current situation it was kind of appropriate. My truck was packed down with Christmas presents, food for the festivities, and two very excited already sugar induced children. I was in no mood for a routine traffic stop.
The officer approached our vehicle and retrieved my husbands license and registration. Then he very seriously said, "Sir, do you realize your tags our out of date."
My husband, always very polite to law enforcement people, says, "I'm very sorry officer but no I don't believe they are. They don't go out until December of next year."
This was all shortly after they started doing the two year tags in our state.
The officer very frustrated at being told no tells us, "Sir, I have eyes and those tags are dead in December of 2004."
This is where I pipe up with, " Yeah, and this is December of 2003 so their not out of date, sir." and this was not said with much niceness.
The officer actually argued with us until I got out of the vehicle with him insisting I stay seated. I walked around to the front of the truck pointed to the pretty yellow sticker that read
Dec 04 and showed him my calendar from my purse that indeed this was December of 2003.
Flabbergasted and quite a bit angry at me for proving him wrong the officer apologized and then lectured me on the dangers of disobeying a police officer. I badly wanted to lecture him on how he as a police officer should at least know what year it was but decided Christmas in jail did not seem a wonderful idea.
The next day we called to share this story with a friend of our's on the force and as a New Year's present for the officer he taped a desk sized calendar to the steering wheel in his squad car.
Like I said everyone has thier days.
