I've noticed a paradigm shift among the cowboys in Parker County, Texas. It was so surprising that at first my subconscious refused to acknowledge it, but bit by bit I embraced it as fact. So, here it is more and more tough guy cowboys are seen with small dogs and most especially, horror of horrors, the Yorkshire Terrier! While there are still plenty of Labs, Australian Shepherds, Blue Heelers, Catahoolas and Cowdogs to be seen in the bed of the pickup truck, more often than not I also see a cute little toy dog (ie: Yorkshire Terrier) in the air conditioned truck cab and/or ordering everyone around in the barn.

Indeed, the Yorkshire Terrier seems oblivious of its small size. They have a truly unique disposition. This little dog is highly energetic, brave, loyal, clever and is eager for adventure, and even trouble. While affectionate with its owner, the Yorkie can be suspicious of strangers as well as aggressive to strange dogs and other small animals. It is not uncommon for a Yorkie to challenge a dog many times its size. They do best with older and considerate children but are nothing but loving and affectionate with their immediate family.

The Yorkshire Terrier is believed to have originated in Lancashire and Yorkshire, England with its beginnings among the historically famous weavers of Yorkshire who migrated from Scotland to Lancashire and Yorkshire in the middle of the 19th century. They were used to keep the rat population at bay. Soon, the Yorkie became the fashionable pets of the aristocracy in the late Victorian period.

Today, the Yorkie is still one of the most popular of small dogs. In 2007 the American Kennel Club announced that the Yorkshire Terrier bypassed the German Shepherd and Golden Retriever to become the second most popular dog. The Labrador Retriever still reigns supreme in the number one spot.

But why are these macho men suddenly attracted to this tiny dog who only weighs between seven and ten pounds when full grown? Perhaps the women brought the dogs into the house first and the men were smitten. Even though they are small in size, their personality has great magnitude. Maybe one look into their beautiful, round, deep-brown eyes melted the heart of the tough guy. Or maybe (gasp!) our men are becoming more in touch with their feminine side! Thank you Oprah!

Whatever the reason, it looks as though the Yorkie is here to stay. Having been around since the 19th century we know this breed has staying power. Its loving and clownish antics will keep you entertained for hours and when properly vaccinated and cared for the Yorkie has few health problems and will live a long life. They love to take walks, curl up beside you in your favorite chair and will greet you with excitement and love each time you come home.

The Yorkshire Terrier is not for everyone, but if you do want to bring one of these little guys into your home please go to a reputable breeder where you are allowed to see the mother, or you may even check animal shelters and Yorkshire Terrier rescue groups.
