Confederate Flag Day and the controversy behind it

The flying of the confederate flag and the Day of its celebration in the US have caused a lot of controversy to rage between various segments of the US population. To understand this debate, which as some times can become quite heated, one has to understand a little more about the issues being raised.

To confederate flag, also called the Southern Cross, was designed to acknowledge the efforts of the men and women of southern US states who took part in the America Civil war. In comprises of a blue cross, which contains thirteen white stars, set against a red background. To these people it is a sign of acknowledgement and remembrance of the heritage of these states. Therefore, many of the states in this area of the US consider it appropriate to fly the Confederate Flag alongside that of the national US Flag. What is more, these same supporters also point out that the Confederate Flag is the forerunner to the current "stars and stripes" of the national flag.

However, opponents of the flying of this flag argue that it has racial connotations, which are not appropriate in today's equal and multi-cultural society. This argument is based upon that prevalence of racial slavery and segregation that was witnessed in the past within the Southern states. For example, it brings back memories of the effects of Jim Crow's law on segregation between white and back members of society, which although supposed to lead to equality resulted in the oppression of the black population.

Another issue that opponents raise is the recent association that the Confederate Flag has with extremist groups. For example, the racially motivated Ku Klux Klan group use it as their symbol, an act that does demean the heritage aspect of the Flag. The problem in this respect is that once a derogatory or offensive connection is made with a symbol, this creates a situation that when such a symbol is displayed it causes concern and offence to certain sectors of the population. For example, the swastika, before its adoption by the Nazi party, had a very benign association in the minds of the public. However, since that association has been made many consider the Swastika to be a symbol of hatred. The extremist group adoption of the Confederate Flag has caused it to suffer from the same scenario. Many people in the US view the flag now more for the hatred and oppression that it represents than the honourable purpose of honouring the bravery of the confederate warriors who gave their lives defending their states.

The debate surrounding the controversy has not simply manifested itself solely within the Southern States of the USD either. There have been several political discussions regarding to issue in both Congress and the House of Representatives. However, to date a equable resolution appears to be as far away as ever.

The problem with resolving this controversy is that there are valid reasons for both arguments. The states have a right to honour their heritage but, at the same time, they must be mindful of not offending members of their community to which such celebrations may cause offences and hurt.
