Carpet is not just for floors anymore. In the 1950's, carpet trends went from area rug pieces to covering an entire room and what a luxury it seemed like back then; fast forward to 2008. There is now such a variety of ideas that involve carpeting as decorating a room or area that one can find ideas from the internet to magazines to popular television decorating shows; such as, "Trading Spaces". Never has there been a more popular a time than now to incorporate carpeting into your decorating plans. It has moved beyond a simple cushion for the feet to a unique decoration for the eyes.
Moving into a new house within the next month, I have done some research on self-decorating ideas to save time and money. Carpeting has taken a front row seat to other ideas in a unique way. The unusual patterns and colors of the 1960's carpet have re-emerged in a popular way and never before has avocado green been so popular.
You may be questioning the idea of carpet on walls, but it works if well executed and the results can be fabulous; creating envious compliments from your friends. Unusual wall coverings are popular now and at the top of the list; carpet. Here are a few ideas on how to incorporate unconventional carpeting into a room, without covering a single floor.
1. A headboard for a bed. Set the bed up against a desired wall either facing out into the room or sofa-like against the wall. Take coordinating colors from the coverlet or bedspread on the bed and use those colors in the way of carpet squares to create a headboard or background on the wall above the bed.
2. Carpet an entire wall. It brings back the 1960's and early 70's vision of an entire carpeted room, but the difference is, you are carpeting just one wall. In a game room this can a popular method because it can add character to the one room that is meant to be a casual meeting area for fun activities. You can choose a short fibered carpet blend or a popular shaggy frieze carpet. To keep costs at a minimum it is recommended that one go to their local carpet store to view discontinued carpet samples. You would be surprised at the merchandise that is available. On a carpeted wall, items such as homemade pictures from children and other interesting hangings can be attached just as easily as if the wall were simply painted or papered.
3. Squares of different colored carpet can open an entire world of creativity if you let your mind go. Set them in a pile next to your television and use them as mats for sitting as needed on a wooden or even carpeted area during family night or a couple's game night. Arrange the squares in an unusual pattern of the floor before a get together to add to a particular theme or party idea.
4. Picture framing. This is something I use in my guest room and the carpet border
surrounding pictures adds a new dimension to the entire decor. Pick out certain photos/art work and place them on carpet squares (either pre-cut to size or as is) and make the carpet the border of the art in place of a frame. Use acid-free glue or tape to adhere the picture to the carpet. Once completely dry, attach a hook onto the back of the square and hang. With all of the different choices of carpet patterns or solid colors the possibilities are endless. Place them on the wall at an angle to mix it up even more.
Who knew that the carpet we walk on each day has so many other interior decorating uses than just laying under our feet? It is always fun to discover new ways to use material/items that have been around for decades. The possibilities for using carpet as a part of decorating a room's walls can bring out all kinds of creativity if you let yourself think outside the box.
