for hours without success. It was now the 12th and she had not heard from Alan. The Phone just rang and rang. Each ring unanswered brought more tears, anxiety, and sorrow. "Where are you Alan? Pick up the phone God damn it," she shrieked with despair.
It was now the 13th and dark bags had taken over Lara's eyes. She was wandering the city with many other worrying souls in desperation, looking for their loved ones.
Lara sat at Alan's steps waiting for him to just show up and say he's okay. Hours went by with still no sign of him. She wandered his neighborhood for a while and began walking back.
An inconspicuous looking man on the other side of the street caught her attention. His head was down and he was wearing a baseball cap pulled over his face. She studied the man through her bloodshot, glassy eyes.
It was him. She jolted across the street with no regard for her own safety. It seemed like the world was in slow motion, as she felt every step plant into the concrete. Each stride seemed like an eternity until she met her destination - her man. Her love.
She tackled his body with her arms. She squeezed him and let out a yelping cry. She then pushed his chest and viciously let her hands loose, striking his face and arms and neck. "Where were you? I've been calling you," she screamed with fury.
She noticed a cut above his eye and a bruise on his cheek. "What happened to you? What is wrong? Were you hurt when the planes hit?"
"No, I am fine." It was so good to hear his voice, she thought. "Lara, I cannot see you anymore. I cannot put you in danger."
"What are you talking about?"
"Haven't you watched the news? Don't you know who has committed these horrendous acts?"
"That changes nothing, Alan." Lara followed Alan's eyes to a group of men who started to gather near by. They were staring in the direction of her and Alan. Lara knew that these men presented danger; she could feel it.
"Please Lara, let us part now before we become what I know we would've been. We cannot become that. Not now."
"You are talking crazy, Alan." The group of men was getting louder. Words like, "Towel head," "Arab," and "Terrorist" were becoming audible.
"I was beat up by a herd of men just like that yesterday, Lara. I escaped with my life. Don't you see, I resemble those men on the planes. Did you see their photos on the news? They are detaining people in the city who look like me, as we speak. I won't let any danger come your way Lara. That is why we must not see each other."
"You stop right now. That
