"You are really different Lara. Do you know that?" The words were proclaimed with pure sincerity.
"Different, huh. You really are a sweat-talker." Lara's sarcasm caused Alan to blush.
As the days passed, Lara's demeanor remained playful and fun, but there affection for one another was growing quite serious. September 8th rolled around and their lips had met in union for the first time, and Alan had found a way to temporarily tame Lara's repartee.
Summer break was over and school had begun again. Lara found herself daydreaming about Alan at school anytime she wasn't teaching. Any chance she got she'd think of everything unique about him - at lunch, walking to work, in the teacher's lounge.
The eleventh rolled around, and it began as a normal day for Lara. The sun was shining bright and as soon as her feet touched the floor in the morning, she thought about the date that she and Alan were to have that night. She was even more jovial going to work than normal with her new found love.
The American Revolution was in full effect in Lara's classroom this morning. She felt it was her moral duty to get the kids energized and passionate about the freedom that they had in America. She was so respected among her peers for her zest for teaching, despite her young age.
The chalk sketched September 11, 2001 into the board. As the clock clicked 8:45 a clamor of disaster echoed through the classroom. A noise erupted that ran rods of horror through everyone. They all ran for the window to see what was happening. Lara kept order in the classroom, as she left to meet with the other teachers who gathered in the hallway. Muffled whispers floated through the air of an airliner that accidentally flew into the World Trade Center.
An hour passed and the tower collapsed. Debris was coating the city and New York was in a state of panic. The school decided to evacuate at that moment, and when they returned Lara McDerman would have a new history to teach of, for the years to come.
Lara ran home like she was running for her life and by the time she reached her house, just before 10:30, she heard that same deafening noise. Her knees buckled and she fell to the ground in horror. Two people crossed her mind instantaneously upon realizing what had just happened. She used the wall to pull herself up and grab the phone. She lied on the floor as she dialed the numbers, breathing like she was taking her last breaths. Tears flowed naturally. Her heart thumping so loud it was audible.
The calling persisted
