Tips for buying a digital camera as a gift

Digital cameras make great gifts, but choosing from the many available brands can be a bit intimidating, especially with the proliferation of new tech that's out there. Still, shopping for a digital camera doesn't have to be an exercise in confusion. Generally, look for a camera that is simple to use, easy to carry, and most of all, offers great picture quality. Recognized brand names are a good place to start to compare quality and reliability. However, sometimes going for the cheaper buy is a better option if it meets the basic needs of the user. Below are just a few tips to make your shopping easier and less time-consuming:

1) If you're buying for an amateur, choose a digital camera that is easy to use. It's tempting to go for a lot of doodads, but if the user doesn't need the extras or doesn't know how to use them, you're simply wasting money. Instead, find a brand with basic features that can still deliver quality pictures. Many user-friendly cameras offer at least three or four megapixels to capture great colorful images. A simple point-and-shoot camera also makes picture taking fun and easy. Other basic features to look for are a good-quality LCD screen, simple-to-understand menus, and a great zoom function.

2) Consider the type of batteries needed. Many digital cameras operate with proprietary battery brands which makes replacing them very inconvenient, especially if you're out on the road. Find brands that operate on standard AA batteries, which are available anywhere you go.

3) Memory card formats are very important. Compact Flash cards are the standard for most cameras and their accompanying flash drives work with most operating systems. Whatever camera you choose should, at minimum, be capable to use Compact Flash memory cards.

4) A wider lens makes for better image capture, especially if you're aiming for a large object. Smaller cameras tend to have narrower lens, although they are less weighty. Decide if the user will appreciate portability over the function of a wider lens. A more experienced photographer will probably prefer the latter while an amateur who may want to just take vacation pictures may appreciate a less weighty camera to carry.

5) The zoom feature can't be stressed enough. This feature is as important as resolution, if not more. An optical zoom lets you capture more light and detail from a farther distance, which gives you better-quality pictures. Note that a digital zoom merely captures the central point of the image picked up by the camera's sensor, so you will not get the full image. So, make sure you choose a brand with an optical zoom over a digital zoom.

6) Look at the accessories. Many cameras don't come with the extras like memory cards or batteries, so make sure you tally them into your budget. Other extras you may want to consider are lenses, camera cases, and compact flashes.

7) Be sure to compare prices as well as brands for the best deal. Go online to review sites that offer comparative prices, user ratings as well as comments about troubleshooting. Being forewarned will keep you from making a regrettable purchase.

Again, shopping for a digital camera doesn't need to be a frustrating endeavor. Once you know what to look for, it can even be fun. And best of all, you're giving a gift that will capture memories that can be shared.
