Memoirs: The Internet

Who needs the internet? ME!

Up until May 2007 I was not interested in the internet whatsoever, I mean who wanted to sit in front of a computer screen for hours on end, straining eyes and suffering with headaches and aches of the body through being in front of there all the time. Who wanted to be mind numbed by all the information that you could have access too?

Not me that was for sure, I had too many other things I liked to do with my time, mainly my cross stitching for which I would spend hours on day after day, sitting in the same position, straining eyes, suffering with headaches and aches of the body through concentrating all the time! This was much more fun.

My husband was a huge fan of the computer and all it had on offer, we had our computer upstairs and so he would sit up there for a few hours a day. I did not mind it was nice for us both to have our separate interests after all. I remember that he was sick of being upstairs all the time and wanted to be able to sit down with us and watch some television of a night-time. His idea was to bring the computer downstairs and have it in our lounge/living room. I was horrified at this thought, I mean that computer was the old-fashioned huge computer, it would stand out like a sore thumb, and it would make my lovely neat lounge look so untidy. I said no.

Then we moved, and there was nowhere really in our new house to have a computer upstairs. I still did not want one downstairs, so we compromised he would sell the old computer and invest in a laptop and then that way he could sit downstairs with it and the family, still have a computer but it would not be an eyesore for me. So of a night time I would sit contented with my cross stitch, he would sit next to me with his laptop!

So when did things change I hear you ask, well with the move I had acquired a lot of things that I did not need anymore, plus I had also had a new baby and so had a lot of things that I did not want and needed to get rid of. My husband planted the seed in my mind, not to give it away as planned, but of selling, it instead on a thing called eBay, a big marketplace that allows a person to sell new and second hand things. At first I thought, "No, I am not doing that" the thought terrified me; I did not have the first clue about any of it! My husband said that he would show me and so he did, and thus my first experience of the internet was born.

It was quite daunting and a little scary as my knowledge of computers was literally zero and I had to
