management
When business is up and running, you need to manage the work-flow properly. This is especially when business get really good. Being inefficient in the end can really hurt the good will of your business. A customer typically would not like to idea of waiting too long for a piece of cake or some cookies. That is why from cashier counter to back end work like baking and delivering forward to the shop front needs careful operational steps. A systematic and yet not too structural process that can allow some form of flexibility will be ideal. For instant, to shorten the distance between the kitchen and the shop front by implementing a line which can pushed the freshly baked product out effectively. A fast way to process payment. The space for people to queue should not be blocking the way of those who are browsing around the shop.
Essentially, with the planning stage done, you are almost ready to start your new bakery. Diversification blend with creativity in the type of cookies or cakes that you have not only creating a niche in the market, it also publicize to people by words of mouth. Because people just love it when it is something different. So the step for starting up the bakery or a cookie business would be as follows:
Step 1: Gather capital for the business. If you are looking at a relatively small store selling cakes and cookies, a total of fifty thousands should be enough. Get a business loan somewhere, preferably from a bank if you do not have it. Take note that it is a risk to take up a loan to start a business.
Step 2: Source for staffs and especially baker if you are not one yourself.
Step 3: Get a good location with reasonably rental rates. Of course, it has to a good location with massive human traffic.
Step 4: Renovate the shop. Of course, you had already done your fair share of planning earlier, the design should be very aligned with the operational work-flow and objective.
Step 5: Calculate break even margin and potential operational costs. Consider your left over money from the expenditure from rental, staffs and miscellaneous costs.
Step 6: Publicize on papers or even start a website for your shop. You may also want to get a staff or two to distribute phamplets on your shop which can be rather old fashion, but it actually works.
Step 7: Gather feedback from staffs and valued customers. Generally, if you are at this stage you are doing rather well because you are looking for ways to improve your business. Look out for suggestion from your staffs and customers because they can see what you cannot.
Step 8: Be creative on your business operation. Expand into more store if you are confident. You may also want to consider online selling or supply chain business that distributes the baked products to other shops which in turn converted your business into a franchising supply chain business. You never know, it might just work.
I hope my idea on how to start a bakery or a cookie business may be helpful in your consideration of starting one. I have looked and replicate certain good practices from other areas of business in trying to cover all aspect in relation to starting such business. Again, all business involved risk, you have to be prepare before starting a business or rather any business for that matter.
