There are a number of things you can do to physically prevent a rape. However, before the rape even gets to the physical stage, one must look at preventing the rape on both the psychological and, yes, emotional levels, effectively stopping the rape before it starts.
Rape is "the act of making someone partake involuntarily in sexual acts...". Means include violence, drugs, coercion, and a number of other illicit tactics, but they all boil down to one common theme - one party says no, the other forces the issue. However this is achieved, the end result is the same.
Many people make the mistake of associating the word "rape" with a violent accosting from a stranger. Images of dark alleys, lone women walking at night, and other media stereotypes are prevalent. However, stereotypes fail to include rapes by familiar faces, rapes that occur when the victim is incapacitated, or even rapes committed against men. These types of occurrences DO happen, and are just as serious as the stereotypical "rape scene" most people imagine.
The key to preventing a rape from occurring can be summarized in one word - control. Rapists like to feel that they are in charge, they are controlling the situation. To prevent a rape, control must be asserted. To put it basic terms, stand up and take charge. This is by no means a suggestion that if rape is imminent you should confront your attacker with physical violence. This could possibly serve to make the situation worse.
What the word control means in this instance is being wary and cautious, and keeping your feelers out. Date rape (also "contact" or "acquaintance rape") is one of the most key times to emphasize this control. With the introduction of date rape drugs like ketamine, GHB, and Rohypnol ("roofies"), the matter of consent or "fighting back" is completely taken out of the equation. Excessive alcohol and "designer drugs" also result in similar effects. Rapists use the party setting and laid back atmosphere to "stalk their prey". Being aware and in control at all times helps to prevent becoming a victim - this is by no means a condemnation of party drugs or parties themselves. However, doing both in moderation could very well prevent a rape from ever occurring.
To return to my earlier point, the emotional control needed to prevent rape is something inherent to the person. Many times, victims of rape feel ashamed or disgusted with themselves, or feel as though the incident is their fault. I cannot stress enough how false this is.
