How to support a friend who is grieving

SECOND BOSTON TRIP - SUDDEN FUNERAL!

June 4, 2007

I wrote you all (didn't know you yet Helium) about a great trip to Boston - Memorial Day Weekend - a kind of 'Memorial Day before the fact'? Well, it was fact this weekend! My friend Mike's mother died only twelve hours after I returned home from Boston Memorial Day! I had said a prayer to God that He not let the 90-year old woman suffer much longer - as she would have, eventually. I wrote you how content she seemed when I'd last seen her - singing, humming, a strange sense of satisfaction in her facial expression. She had a glimpse of where she was going, and soon as it turned out.

So, not having driven my car much over 2,000 miles from September last year to May of this year, I ended up driving it half as much within a week - two round trips to Boston, etc. In-between these two trips back-to-back weekends, my car was serviced, NYS Inspection, etc. - $193! I could have used that money! Oh well! Good thing the car was brought up to what was expected of it. It ran great! Gas mileage was good too!

Rather than drive up Thursday May 31, I drove up Friday June 1, Marilyn Monroe's 81st birthday, just as it was to be dusk. I took I-95, stopped off at various Mickey D's, getting enough shut-eye at the last one near Exit 61. I then left at dawn the morning of Saturday June 2nd - having had good shut-eye at that last Mickey D's - one of the best on CT's I-95. I arrived in Taunton, MA around 10 a.m., ate at IHOP's, a good hungryman's breakfast - three scrambled eggs with a triple stack of pancakes, along with Portuguese sausage, juice and all I'd want of coffee. I had a gallon of lemonade in the car - much of it already consumed.

I called my friend Mike, and it was arranged that I stay at Middleboro, MA Day's Inn, one we both stayed at last September. I liked the Day's Inn in Taunton (was not taunted), where we stayed last week, but this one in Middleboro is by far the best. I really loved it there - my own room - queen-size bed, own refrig, a mini-coffee-maker - even a couch! It was very nice - a swimming pool contained within the motel off the lobby area. I did not swim there (had last September), but I had a good look at it - just it being there, OK by me - part of the scene! Mike and I swam in it last September when the weather was hardly appropriate (mid 60s) but still nice!

Thank God for my finally checking in that motel as I was able to take a soaking bath, be of good hygiene for the funeral. One
