Candle magic is the art of using the power of fire combined with the influence of colours and positive thought to affect a change in the world around you.
The light of a single naked flame can help you to relax your mind and aid meditation or focus your mind in visualisation techniques. The power kick it gives magical work cannot be overlooked either.
The colours of the candles themselves are important in candle magic, for each colour has its own energy frequency which influences the power you are raising. The correct coloured candle can make or break a spell. Get it right and your spell has a greater chance of success.
Since the first flame flickered into existence all those eons ago fire has been regarded as sacred. Its mysterious quality has been revered and used by all cultures and religions across the world.
For example, the Ancient's burned torches to invoke their Gods and Goddess', and used fire to honour their Holy days in the form of huge bonfires.
Modern day pagans still use and respect fire in the same way.
Religions throughout the world use fire in the form of candle light, to symbolise an act of devotion to this or that deity, or to honour the souls of dearly departed loved ones.
Candle magic is one of the oldest, easiest, and probably most effective forms of magic there is, as it is the safest way of harnessing the power of fire.
To follow is a list of basic colours, along with their meaning and tips on how to use them to produce the best effect.
WHITE
White is the balance of all colours, so therefore can be used as a substitute when the correct coloured candle cannot be found.
In their own right, white candles can be used in spells for new beginnings, meditation, healing, peace, purity, protection, enlightenment and truth seeking.
Try thinking of a question you would like the answer to. Then, while glaring into the flame of a white candle, allow your body to relax and your mind to clear, as you take slow deep breaths.
Imagine you are surrounded by a brilliant white light. Allow this light to envelope and infuse all your limbs.
Slowly images will spring to mind. Allow these images to unfold naturally; don't try to influence them as you are trying to achieve subconscious answers to your question not forced ones.
Later write down what you saw. The images may not make any sense right now but you may be pleasantly surprised in the near future.
YELLOW
Candles of this colour are used for communication, confidence, wisdom, creativity, activity, visions and concentration.
Light a yellow candle the night before a job interview, exam or any other event you feel particularly nervous about.
Concentrate on why you feel so nervous about this situation, then, write all of your worries on a piece of paper. Now burn this paper in the flame of the candle whilst imagining your fears melting away.
Your anxieties will be carried away in the smoke and you should be left feeling more relaxed and confident.
ORANGE
This colour symbolises creativity, attraction, strength, success, intelligence and mental clarity.
If you need to make a decision but can't make your mind up between lists of possibilities, then write the choices in a circle on a piece of paper.
Place an orange candle in the centre of the paper, and then light the candle concentrating on your need for the right outcome.
As it slowly burns, the wax will inevitably melt and trickle down the side of the candle onto the paper.
When it has burnt down completely, the choice with the most melted wax on it is your answer.
PINK
Pink candles can be used in spells for love, harmony, family, affection, romance and friendship.
Try this spell to ensure your partner stays faithful.
Inscribe the name of your loved one on a pink candle while visualising them.
Think not only of their physical attributes but how they make you feel. Let your feelings of happiness fill you inside before lighting the candle.
Continue thinking of them as the candle burns.
When it has gone out and the remaining wax has hardened, wrap it in a length of pink ribbon. Place this little parcel under your pillow so that the spell can continue working as you sleep.
RED
The influences of the colour red can be used for sexuality, passion, courage, strength, power, energy, vitality and love.
Invite your loved one to dinner, making sure there are red candles burning between you as you eat.
A night of steamy passion should follow!
Or, to help you find a partner, light a red candle just before you go to bed whilst imagining the characteristics you find attractive strength, kindness, independence, etc.
Then, as the candle burns say;
Candle of love, candle red,
Let this candle flame be fed,
With the purist thoughts and hearts desire,
Let me find my true love's fire.
Repeat this little incantation every night for one lunar month.
PURPLE
Purple is the ultimate spiritual colour symbolising psychic ability, inner harmony, healing, wisdom, success and independence.
If you wish to remember more details about your dreams to gain insight into your subconscious, light a purple candle just before you go to bed. As you gaze into the flame say:
As my body falls to sleep,
The memories of my dreams my mind shall keep.
If nothing happens on the first night don't give up. It sometimes takes a while for your subconscious mind to get the message!
BLUE
Blue stands for spirituality, loyalty, inspiration, wisdom, truth, healing and laughter.
To ensure loyalty from a friend or work colleague, place a picture of the person in question underneath a blue candle before lighting it.
Gaze into the flame and concentrate upon pouring love and friendship into this person while visualising a gentle blue light surrounding them.
The more energy you put into the spell, and the longer you concentrate on this person, the more trustworthy they will become.
When the candle has burnt down take the remaining wax and make it into a little figure before it hardens. Keep this little wax doll in a place where you will see it and can handle it on a daily basis.
The presence of the wax figure will reinforce the spell and help it to continue working long after the spell has been cast.
GREEN
This colour represents the energies of Mother Nature, love, renewal, abundance, luck, fertility, healing, prosperity, money and employment.
Light green candles while filling out an application form for a new job, or while choosing lottery number.
Alternatively, for a much needed injection of cash to help pay for an unexpected bill, etc, try holding a new shinny penny in your left hand as you think of the amount you need (be realistic, a million pounds is not likely to just fall in your lap).
Light a green candle while still visualising your need. Place the penny near or underneath the candle so that the wax can melt and cover the coin.
When the wax has hardened, hang this little package above your front door to encourage money into your home.
BROWN
Candles of this colour are mostly used for stability, the home, family matters, concentration, material increase and animal magic.
Stroke and fuss over your pet as you are surrounded by the light from brown candles. This will help you bond with the animal and will help you gain insight into your pets personality.
Or to help you unwind after a hard day at work take a bath whilst basking in the light of brown candles.
BLACK
Contrary to popular belief black does not symbolise evil. It is the absence of colour, and so is protective representing the night, the universe, conclusions, meditation and the banishing of all kinds of negativity, guilt, regret, etc.
To help you give up a vice - for example, smoking - draw a symbol of it on a black candle.
Visualise your cravings disappearing as the candle burns down When it has burnt down completely, take the melted wax and something that represents your vice (a cigarette), and bind them together in black string or ribbon whilst still visualising your intentions to quit.
Bury this parcel as far away from your home as possible.
