The Secret Dancer
She Danced In her sleep and she danced in her dreams but she never danced in public. She danced in her room, she danced anywhere she thought no-one was watching. Her mum had asked her many a time to join a dance class. She wouldn't allow her to sign her up though.
" Why not?"
" I'm no good,"
" I've watched you and you dance well, but classes are there to teach you new things, so it doesn't matter if you think your no good there'll be lots of people who are just the same."
But she wasn't convinced. As much as she would never admit it she was a natural talent, as much as she denied it she remembered every movement, every step to every dance she'd ever watched and she would perform to an audience of one, herself.
There were occasions she would catch herself dancing down the street, she did it subconciously often without realising, she would hear the music and her feet would take over. One day she was dancing in the gym hall whilst everyone else was getting changed and didn't notice the teacher walk in. She watched in amazement as she glided across the floor.
when she'd stopped she had to ask:
" Why have you not signed up for any of the dance classes?"
" oh I can't dance" she said, "I just mess about."
" But your good you could join the troop."
She looked at her in horror,
" Oh no" she said. "I couldn't do that, I'm not good enough to join a troop and I don't like dancing in public."
The teacher let the matter drop and got on with the lesson, she knew however that she had to convince her somehow. She phoned her mum and asked if she'd taken lessons.
"No, she'd never let me sign her up. I'm sure it is a confidence thing though, she thinks that everyone will laugh at her if they see her dance."
" But she is so good."
" I have an idea" said her Mum,"if you'd be willing to go along with it, it might just be the boost she needs to break her out of her shell."
She awoke a few weeks later to her mothers calls.
"what!" she shouted grumpily. "What's the matter."
" Letter for you."
Now she hardly ever recieved letters so naturally she was curious.
"Who would be writing to me?" she asked.
" Open it her" mum said casually, "you won't find out else.
If she hadn't been so curious she'd have been suspicious. She opened up the letter to find she'd been invited to an audition at the London school of dance.
