The news on the street is that men gawk, whistle and make appreciative comments when they see a woman who they think is physically attractive. Visual images are the first to make an impact and they certainly stimulate men to use their words. While men, in general, are deeper than the way they sound, and may not truly only "go" for a beautiful woman, they certainly leave the impression that appearance is on the top of their list when it comes to reasons for wanting to be close to a woman.
Magazines fill racks in stores with scantily clad, seductively posed women on the front, and they are there to whet the purchasing power of men. Pornography is rampant and readily available in a variety of forms. At first glance, this can make women feel that men are more interested in looks than they are anything else.
Probably those smiling, beautiful, sensually posed women are more of a visual stimulus to something deeper in a man than women might think. Maybe attractive, smiling women make men feel attractive. Feeling attractive boosts confidence; confidence stimulates a desire to take risks or action, and action produces results. That first stimulus may be different for women than it is for men, since they are not as visually oriented, but the chain reaction is the same.
Men DO go for looks to some degree, but this does not mean that looks are all that they are looking for in the long haul of a relationship. It is probably safe to say that a man would appreciate it if the woman he loves cares enough about her appearance and his "at a glance reaction", to make a reasonable effort to be attractive. It is probably also safe to say that men are looking for something deeper and more enduring than a catalog face and figure when it comes to spending their lives with someone. Men are capable of loving deeply and with more than their eyes.
Men may not "go" for looks, but they certainly do appreciate them on some level. It is the first thing that they notice and women notice it as well. This is not only a male issue, however. Women are often guilty of projecting their own insecurities on to men when it comes to the appearance department. What women know men are thinking in a moment, because of their obvious reactions, is not the whole picture of what men want. Maybe men should use more of their words and women should listen to what they have to say. That might just begin to change the world.
