Fun Flag Day Crafts for Kids

Are there fun Flag Day activities for kids? Isn't Flag Day a solemn day to be observed for its important history?

Flag Day has a significant meaning for the Americans. This was the day when the American flag was first flown, symbolizing to the world the birth of the United States of America, the coming together of independent states of people who chose to be bound together and have kept their unity through their loyalty to their common flag.

Fun crafts need not be frivolous. However, they can teach kids in a better way than any boring lecturer who merely rattles off pages of words, no matter how meaningful their strings of words can be.

Appropriate activities for the week leading to Flag Day focus on the theme of independence, unity, a cohesive society, the emblems on the flag and their significant symbolism. A skilful parent, community leader or teacher will also bring in elements that add to the significance of a united nation.

Here are some fun Flag Day craft activities:

1. Building a Flag Day Memento Corner

Have children read articles on the origin of Flag Day. Perhaps the signing of a treaty appeals to some of the children. They can surf the Internet for a sample, make their own version of the treaty on craft paper or on computer and enact the signing.

Another group may want to research the making of the first flag. They may want to make their own miniature flags. These flags must be made according to the proportion and the children will learn how important being mathematically precise is in the process.

Others might want to look into the people groups who first mooted the idea of a common flag for all. They might want to display these people in cute ways, such as making photocopies of their pictures or photographs and displaying them in photograph frames, sketching them from the pictures or photographs.

On Flag Day itself, have a Show and Tell by the children for other children, their parents or even their classmates who are not in their group.

2. Have a food parade

Everyone needs to eat. What better way of teaching children harmony and tolerance than by having the children share their state's or race's food specialties. Food craft is a plenty and fun.

With thanks to advancement in transportation, it is not difficult for Americans to move from one state to another due to job relocation, family ties and just personal preference! Within a class setting, children may come from a few states or, in the case of international school, even from
