How to get your kids involved with gardening

This might sound a little crazy but,it is a fact that, one of the best ways to get children involved in anything is to tell them it is for adults only and that they are too young to partake in an activity. The utilization of reverse psychology can stimulate a desire in children to prove that they are mature enough to handle something you have deemed too complicated or sophisticated for a child. It works great for smaller children and with some careful planning it can work on teenagers too. My idea is based on my own experiences as a parent and remembering how my parents often dealt with myself and my siblings as we were growing up.

You have to sell the idea without letting the child or, children in question, realize what is taking place. Your enthusiasm for gardening has got to show very positive overtones as you skillfully lay down the bait that is sure to catch the child's interest. The one thing that is sure to keep them in hiding is the word "WORK". Take care not to mention that gardening can encompass serious physical labor. Children of this day and age seem to have a certain allergy to the mere mention of work.

Drawing attention to the physical part of gardening is sure to send a youngster packing it toward the nearest remote control that is attached to their favorite electronic device. There are a few certain circumstances that will almost guarantee you success in luring almost any kid into the garden. The main one being, your own show of enthusiasm.

Place heavy enthusiasm into selecting plants and seeds to use in your garden. Take the children shopping with you and let them look at the seeds and plants. Talk to them about the colors and sizes of plant material you may be considering for purchase. Include the child in your selection of plant material.

Ask them what they think and like. This would be a good time to let the child decide on planting something they take interest in. Those seed companies know how to photograph the plants they display on the front of each package of seed. Let the pictures sell the idea for you. This is even better if you are planting edible plants. Kids love to be creative and growing there own food is something they can take pride in. Make sure that you praise your child for their desire to tackle a project that is not only fun but also rewarding.

Children need praise and then they need direction. Let them read the seed packs or planting instructions that come with the plants. Discuss with them how you will get the garden
