Poetry: Sonnets

I Am Alone, Catherine de Medici

I was barely thirteen when I married,
And never dreamed that I would be a queen.
To Henri, a girl's young heart I carried,
And fancied he could love a Florentine.

But his mistress, Diane, possessed his heart,
I had no way to change his direction,
So I delved into potions and black art,
But only she could stir his affection.

As Henri's queen, I led a quiet life,
Patiently vowing to hate and to wait,
Time would surely make me his dearest wife,
But winning his soul was never my fate.

I am alone, Catherine de Medici,
While they bide as one in eternity.
