Great tips for moms who work at home

Being a work at home mom is one of the most rewarding things I've ever experienced in the 34 years of my life. Not only am I providing for my son, but I am also available to be much more involved in his life, school, etc. This is really important because I am also a single mother. Working at home allows me the opportunity to set my own hours, make as much or as little money as I want, and gives me freedom that I've never had before. It's a dream come true.

However, as with all good things, there are some drawbacks, as well. It's easy to get distracted when you work at home. Throw in a load of laundry here, unload the dishwasher there, water the flowers, make a pitcher of margaritas. No, only kidding about that last one. I have to make a conscious effort to stay on task, otherwise my day slips away from me. I also think it's important that you get up each day and put on your make-up, do you hair, and get dressed.

I have so many people tell me that if they worked at home, they'd never get out of their pajamas. Well, it starts with you staying in your pj's all day, then you move to not even getting out of bed. It'd be easy to get lazy. However, if you get up and get ready, just like you're going into the office, you're somewhat held accountable to something. Now I'm not saying to put on pantyhose or a suit, that's crazy talk! I work at home! Pantyhose and suits are definitely a thing of the past. Thank goodness!

Another important thing when working at home is that you stay organized and be sure you have your own workspace. Don't use the kitchen table for a desk. It just won't work. I finished part of my basement and put my office in there. Ideally, you want a space where you can shut the door when you're not working. That way, there is some divider between your office and your home. You don't want them to be one and the same. It's also nice to have a door because it puts a bit of a barrier between your office and your "helpers", i.e. my son and dog.

If they were able to go in and out as they pleased, there's no telling what my office might look like. I'm sure my financial statements would have little masterpieces drawn all over them, and they would also be crumpled up for use as a pillow by my dog. Now, my son knows mommy's office is off-limits, unless mommy is in there, but the door sure does help. It's just one more obstacle.

As I said before, I feel truly blessed to be able to work at home. Not only am I saving hundreds of dollars on gas and clothing, but I am now able to be involved in my son's Parents Association at his school. I could've never done that working outside of the home because I was working 12 hour days, and I barely had time to play with him. Now, I can always work after my little one goes to bed, or if I can't sleep. I might as well make some extra money from my insomnia, right?

I know this situation isn't for everyone, but it certainly fits me perfectly at this point in my life. That's not to say that things may not change in the future. But right now, I thank my lucky stars each and every day for this opportunity I've been given. And, let me tell you, I'm enjoying the heck out of it.
