Report on Apple's 2008 world wide developers conference

An official geek conference hasn't been this widely anticipated since, well, ever. It sold out early and was covered live by several internet sites.

The 2008 Apple World Wide Developers' Conference, held in San Fransisco, even had an Oscar winner in attendance; former Vice President Al Gore (he sits on Apple's board).

But Al Gore was upstaged by Apple's God, CEO Steve Jobs. Steve took the stage and warmed up his Audience of hundred's of tech developers with some stats too boring to mentions. Suffice to say, they show that people seem to be interested in the iPhone (as if we needed convincing).

The almighty Steve then went on to talk about how iPhone Software 2.0 is specially tailored to address some of the device's business shortcomings. While the phone has been a hit with consumers, businesses have been slow to adopt the device. Steve's hoping to change all that.

The software update, available to all iPhone users, will include support for Microsoft exchange, push email, contacts, calendars and global address book as well as enhanced security features such as the ability to remote wipe.

Apparently a whole bunch of fortune 500 companies have been test driving the software for months and, you guessed it, they all have rave reviews.

The only really new thing he showed was the ability to search in your contacts, with results updating in realtime as they type.

Steve then went on to talk about how easy it is to create applications for the iPhone, which Apple will be opening up for third party developers. He demoed how easy it was to make an application called 'Nearby Friends' (the name need work) which shows you all your contacts within 10 miles.

We already knew that the iPhone will be opened up to third party applications, in fact tens of thousands of developers have been working on their apps for the past few months.

Steve showed us twelve:

- Sega's tilt controlled 'Super Monkey Ball'

- eBay's native bidding application

- Loopt, a location aware social networking app (the name's a little better than 'Nearby Friends's)

- TypePad, an iPhone blogging app

- AP (Associated Press) gives you news specially tailored for the iPhone with their Mobile News Network

- Enigmo, a special little game that utilizes the iPhone's special features

- Cro-Mag Rally, a racing game which uses the phone itself as a steering wheel

- Band, a great sounding band of instruments in your pocket

- Major League Baseball gives you instant video right after the play

- Two applications designed especially for medical
