It is no doubt that Favre was a great QB. He was a good leader, a "blue-collar" QB from the old school mode, and a had decent arm. However, Favre forced two many passes which resulted in interceptions. Favre was a streak passer, just like a "streak shooter" in basketball. Favre threw a whole lot of errant passes too, passes that ended up in the defenses hands.
Favre had all of the other intangibles that make him a great QB, however, his arm and decision making, were something less to be desired. I saw Favre throw several games away by forcing the ball into places where it could get picked.
A QB is most remembered for his arm, his accuracy, his touch, his deep ball strength, etc. Brett Favre wasn't a pure passer. Many guys have played QB in the NFL that were pure passers and do not get nearly the amount of recognition, i.e., Ken Stabler, Ken Anderson, James Harris, Joe Gilliam, and Warren Moon, to name a few. I just don't remember Favre as being a great passer.
Favre had guts. He had spontenaity, guile, and mental toughness. I'll remember those qualities about him long before I remember his arm. Yes, he had a strong arm but that is not good enough if you don't have the accuracy to go along with it.
Favre also had longevity which helped him pad his stats. I remember when Brett Favre was with the Falcons and when he was traded to Green Bay, I was perplexed as to what they saw in him. If Favre would have retired after the season before last, he would have left on a down note in his career, he would not have broken a few more records, and he would not have the distinction of throwing the most ever interceptions in a pro career. He came back last season to put together a nice season and polish off his legacy. However, the interception stat is the biggest blemish on his record. His leaving the NFL with that stat does tarnish his reputation.
Depending on how far you make the list of the greatest QB is the question. I would not put him in top 10 but I'd slot him no lower than 15. Wins, losses, records, and stats are not the only measurables for a QB. Passer ratings can be deceiving, skewered, and incomplete. Passer ratings don't take into account all of the other factors that make up a pro football teams components. But to Favre's credit, he got it done without the great arm, the great surrounding cast (personnel), and all of the interceptions.
