Controlling the electricity bill

The continually soaring costs of energy have consumers hungry for ways to save cash. The price of fuel has swung into an upward freefall and, in turn, has driven up the costs of the basics, like home heating oil, groceries, and electricity. As consumers, solutions for the bigger picture may be pretty much out of our control, however there are some simple, yet effective, ideas that will undoubtedly make a difference in the monthly utility bill.

Unplug. Did you know that appliances can still draw energy from an outlet, even when they're turned off? Unplugging appliances and lighting that are not in use can have a dramatic effect on your monthly electric bill. Take a look around your home. If there's a lamp, blow dryer, or toaster that's not in use, simply pull the plug from the outlet. Don't forget the phone chargers, too!

Change your incandescent light bulbs to the energy-efficient type. Easily recognizable by their coil shape, energy efficient light bulbs can use up to 75 percent less energy than traditional bulbs. While they may be more expensive, the savings you'll enjoy in the long run will be well worth the cost. Take extra care when handling these "smart bulbs." They can be extremely hazardous if broken.

Reduce your shower time and install a low-flow showerhead. A traditional showerhead can use up to seven gallons per minute and most people spend at least 10 to 12 minutes on their morning shower routine. So, if you're singing a morning opera every day, changing your tune can mean more change in your pocket!

Dishes and laundry-load up and cut back. Make sure your dishwasher is full before pushing the start button. Running the dishwasher one or two times a week instead of daily will cut down on hot water and electricity. Schedule one laundry day per week. This might be a challenge for large families, but making the effort will be well worth it.

Insulate. Installing attic insulation can help keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer. The right amount of insulation will help keep the temperature more consistent, causing the furnace or the a/c to click on less frequently. Also, installing a programmable thermostat can reduce your heating and cooling bill. Programming your thermostat back just a few degrees can make a big difference in savings.

Get creative! Saving on your electric bill can mean getting used to some lifestyle changes. So, put your thinking cap on, and don't forget to turn out the light when you leave the room!
