It isn't the cross that is so important, it's the sacrifice of the Man called Jesus, that made the difference in the lives of all of us. Jesus, the most beautiful name ever heard. There's something about that name that is above all names.
Jesus, the beloved Son of our Father, the Lord God Almighty, came to earth to die on that old cross as a sacrifice for our sins. Crucifixion apparently was the way of punishment in those days. It's the value of the lesson learned about the cross.
Why did Jesus have to die between two sinners? He was considered no better than they were, even though He was pure and totally innocent of any wrong doing. Why did He have to shed enough of His pure blood to save all of our sins. Past, present, and future.
His shed blood was what covered the multitude of sins that we had committed. It was our debt, He didn't owe it, but He paid it. That was a debt that was paid in full, and not one of us deserved it. No then, not now, not ever.
The cross was what was chosen, so that's the way Jesus had to die. But I choose to remember the most important thing, and that is this; The old rugged cross made the difference in all of our lives. Without the cross, and the blood that Jesus shed, we would have no hope of ever seeing heaven. No redemption, no eternity with Jesus, and the Father. No hope for anything eternal without Jesus. We would be forever dead in our sins.
The Christian cross is a reminder of the death and ressurection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It is not an idol to be worshipped, it is not a symbol. It is there to keep our hearts and minds on how much the Father loved us when He sent Jesus, His only begotten Son. And whosoever believes on Him will not perish, but have everlasting life with the Father.
Isn't it wonderful to think of Jesus going from a cross to a crown? Jesus is the only reason for the importance of the cross. Many people were crucified on crosses. What makes Jesus death so important is the very reason why He had to die in the first place. His death was our beginning. If He hadn't given His life, we would all have died in our sins. There would be no sacrifice for sin.
I suppose that everyone has their own ideas of why the Christian cross is so important to them. I guess you would have to ask yourself, what comes to my mind when I look at the Christian cross? If it didn't have special significance, why would it be on church steeples? Why would it be in the front of so many sanctuaries? Why do so many people wear crosses around their necks. It's only because of Jesus. The one who died for you and me.
The cross is only a cross without significance. Jesus dying on that cross is the importance of the Christian cross. The Sacrificial Lamb was taken to slaughter by a cold cruel world. At the time they enjoyed what they had done to Jesus. They beat Him, laughed at Him. They spit on Him, speared Him in the side.
They made a crown out of thorns and pressed it down on Jesus head, so hard that the blood ran down His brow. The whole while He loved them. People with human nature aren't capable of the love Jesus felt as they tortured and killed Him.
Sometimes I wonder what they all felt after Jesus was crucified and put to death by their hands. Was there any regret? any shame? Were they afraid of what would happen if Jesus did raise from the dead on the third day?
If they weren't afraid then, they better start being afraid now. Jesus is coming soon, and This time He won't be put on a cross. He is coming to take His children back. He will be feared. There will be no mocking, no spitting on Him. They can not destroy the temple.
Always remember, the old rugged cross made the difference in all of our lives. But Jesus is the reason the cross has meaning.
