When it comes to gift giving, fathers generally fall into two categories. On one hand, you have the dads who love everything and are thrilled by any gift received. On the flip side, you have the fathers who are almost impossible to buy for. This latter group will still smile and tell you how much they love your present. They'll keep that smile on their face all the way up the stairs where they take the gift and toss it into a closet never to be seen again. How do you buy a present for this type of dad? If you're lucky, he might fall into one of the following categories.
THE SPORTS FANS
Is your father a sports enthusiast? Is he an avid NASCAR fan or does he spend hours every weekend watching football games on television? If so, then this opens up an excellent avenue for gift ideas. If you're short on money, you could do something as simple as picking up a baseball cap or a t-shirt that advocates his favorite team. If you have a little more to spend, you could check into buying him an autographed piece of sports equipment such as a baseball or a football. Tickets to a sporting event are also a great idea if your city or one nearby boasts a major team.
THE HOBBYIST
Maybe your father uses most of his free time engrossed in some particular hobby. Does he garden or like to fish? Not only are there numerous types of hobby-related gifts on the market today, but I'll let you in on a little secret. The one thing that a true hobbyist enjoys more than the hobby itself is sharing that hobby with someone he loves. If your dad is a fisherman, make arrangements to go on a fishing trip with him. If he's a wood carver, ask him to take a day to teach and explain his work to you. You'll be giving your father your time and attention, the most priceless gifts of all.
THE BUSINESSMAN
Then again, maybe your dad doesn't care too much for sports and doesn't have time for hobbies because he's always working at the office. Send him flowers. That's right, I said to send him flowers. Most people are under the misconception that only women enjoy having flowers sent to them. This statement couldn't be further from the truth. A flower arrangement is more than a gift; it's a sign that someone was thinking about you and loves you. In addition, it's a symbol that your dad can show off to other people. I'll never forget the huge smile that one of my male coworkers had on his face when I asked him about a vase of roses on his desk one Father's Day. With a dreamy look in his eyes, he answered me with, "They're from my daughter."
THE TELEVISION WATCHER
Are there really any dads out there who don't like a quiet hour or three in front of the television set? It's simple to get a gift for this type of dad just put together a Couch Potato Survival Kit! Grab a basket, bag, or small box and fill it with a variety of your father's favorite snack foods. If you want to add a little humor, throw in some Pepto-Bismol or Rolaids for the possible stomach ache that the junk food might bring about. Place the container along with the remote control next to your father's favorite chair along with a sign warning others away.
