Alternative approaches to energy healing

by Toni McKilligan

Injury and disease are often viewed as being separate from us, as things that happen to us, but are not ours and do not belong to us. The pain and physical changes that accompany them are seen as unnatural. We just want them to go away and so we resist them.

Whenever an injury or illness strikes, however, it is a sign of imbalance within the holistic system that comprises our Being. Looking at them and the pain that comes with them not as foreign invaders, but rather as messages pointing us to what we really need changes them drastically. Instead of fighting a cold or battling cancer, we might want to pay closer attention to the deeper meaning behind them.

Our bodies are complex systems made up of trillions of individual cells, each one with a specific job. The individual cells work in teams (organs, bones, tissues, etc.). They also work in absolute cooperation with all the other teams and the teams work together to keep the whole unit functioning. That is the physical level of existence. Besides the physical, there are the emotional, mental and spiritual aspects to be considered. These may not be tangible matter, but without them the physical system cannot be sustained.

When all four aspects of Being are not cared for and kept in balance, the whole system starts to break down. It may not be detected at the spiritual level, but that is usually where imbalance begins. From there the domino effect transpires and mental and emotional issues start to surface. If they are ignored, the physical Being eventually becomes involved and the result is often disease and even injury. That's usually when we sit up and take notice.
That's also when we dash off to the doctor who addresses the symptoms of the physical condition, but often fails to even acknowledge the imbalance of the other three equally important aspects of Being. Of course, allopathic medicine is indeed helpful and often necessary (particularly in the case of injury). It seeks to cure, but not necessarily to heal. And sometimes in the course of curing one thing, another thing is instigated. Thankfully, science is beginning to see the incongruity of its approach to medical treatment of both injury and disease.

In recent years, alternative healing methods have been worming their way back out of obscurity and are now taking their rightful places next to allopathic treatments for what ails us. More and more traditional allopathic physicians are recognising, if not practicing themselves, homeopathy, Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, and chiropractic as viable alternatives to allopathic care. These less invasive and more holistic therapies are now becoming mainstream and are being sought out by record numbers of patients. And right beside them are the energy therapy practitioners of Reiki, Healing Touch, Touch Therapy, Crystal Therapy, Aromatherapy, Color Therapy and Chakra Therapy, to name but a few.

Each of these healing modalities is an energy-based therapy that operates on the premise that we are essentially spiritual beings having a physical experience. While they each also have specific methodologies and follow certain procedures, they all basically do the same thing. They heal which can, and often does, lead to a cure.

To experience the healing energy that these incredible therapies offer, hold out your hands and rapidly open and close them into loose fists. Do this for about ten seconds. Then rub your hands together for another ten seconds. Now hold your hands about a foot or so apart and then start to bring your palms together slowly. At some point you will feel a slight resistance. It will feel a little like trying to bring two like poles of a pair of magnets together. When this happens, start to bounce your hands against this resistance by pulling them apart about a half inch and then pressing them back toward each other. This will feel similar to pressing your hands against an inflated balloon.

What you are experiencing is the edges of your densest energy field, also called the etheric body. If you hold your hands up in front of a light-colored background and gaze at the space where the edges of your etheric body meet, you may even notice some color or a shimmering effect like a mirage on pavement on a hot day as the two edges are pressed into one another. When someone says that she can see your aura, this is what she is seeing. Now intend for the two edges to blend. One of two things may happen. Your hands may feel suddenly drawn together, or they may feel pushed further apart.

This is what energy healers use to effect healing. By manipulating this energy field with intention, they draw out energetic poisons, remove energy blocks, release emotional obstructions, help ease mental stress and relieve pain. Whether they use just their hands, or crystals, or color or scents, the purpose remains the same.

It isn't necessary to take expensive courses and learn specific methods of using healing energy. Just experiment with what you have just done and see what results you get. You cannot hurt anyone as long as your intention is to heal and not harm. But if you want to learn more about these amazing techniques, a trip to your local library or book store will unveil a wealth of information that will enable to you to confidently and successfully employ healing energy in your own life.

It is very important, however, to understand that energy therapies are not replacements for allopathic medicine. They do, however, compliment medical treatments and can enhance them exponentially. Diabetics have been able to reduce and even completely eradicate the need for insulin. Arthritis has been reversed. Cancer has been cured.

But! And yes, this is a big BUT. Healing only happens when the entire system is in holistic balance. This means a healthy diet, proper exercise, sufficient rest as well as stress reduction. It also means taking care of your emotional needs, your mental needs and your spiritual needs, too. Through energy healing, these can certainly be helped, but it is up to you to make sure that your whole Being is being cared for.

Finally, energy therapies are not the cause of healing. Please do not assume that the healer can do any good without your full consent and cooperation. Healing comes from within. What the energy healer does is provide healing energy. That's all. If your doctor gives you a prescription and you do not take it, it won't work. The same principle applies in energy healing. A healer can give you all the loving energy in the universe, but if you do not accept it and utilize it for your own benefit, it just won't work.
