I strongly believe, without any shadow of a doubt, that the decline in art is due primarily to the capitalization of the film industry. It is now merely a form of entertainment driven by profit, as opposed to its true nature of expression and endeavor to change the world in which we live for the better. Instead of creating unique works of art which touch the human soul, it now concentrates on publicity and advertisement. New and brilliant actors are being sidelined by entertainers who continue to give us the same characters, strange and interesting plot developments are being ignored so that we can see the same old storylines unfold. These films do not even have the confidence within themselves to prove that they are worthwhile, so are dependant on celebrity advertisement and expensive publicity campaigns to sell their films; they sell a product instead of creating a work of art. If they spent less time and money basically re-releasing the same film, and more of their effort and finances working with real artists, and educating and helping new generations of talent we would no doubt see a dramatic change for the better for films, and this would have a knock on effect on society by forcing people to realize that films are not just entertainment but a way of trying to make our world better. If we look at the independent and art film world, these are films made with little or no budget, and non celebrity actors, and still give us a meaningful and engaging film. These are films which are not driven by greed and profit but rather a zeal for creativity and artistic development. And this aspect of the industry' is thriving, not because it's main goal is profit, but because it's driving force is true art. The producer is a main influence on the film industry, with the ability to override the director. A producer has little to no knowledge of art, only to sell a movie as entertainment, yet they are given the influence to sideline the director, an artistic professional who actually knows what he's doing, just so they can give us the same old clichd rubbish we've all seen countless times, just for the sake of a couple of extra DVD sales. A film industry based around profit can only lead to one thing, businessmen giving us slightly different variations of the same product, much like how retail stores offer their customers half a dozen variations of the same colour kettle. Instead of dealing with themes and issues facing our society, producers bow down to them and give us whatever political correctness dictates to them.
