Sustenance, ah sweet sustenance... When anyone walks into Tucci Benuch's in Chicago, the first thing that they are greeted with is two plates of sustenance. One plate contains crispy, fresh bread or fresh Focaccia, the other dish gleams with a little bit of fine olive oil, the best balsamic vinegar that I have ever enjoyed, and a bit of freshly shaved Parmesan-Oreggiano cheese for dipping your bread.
No matter how you slice or dice it, we crave food for a way to sustain ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally. The body may have its needs, but most people seem to veer toward eating to satisfy their desires, or cravings as we like to call them, and for good reason! Simply put, your body knows what it likes. Our physical being craves carbohydrates for fuel, protein for growth, fats for survival, and even caffeine for alertness. Is it any wonder that many of us are chocoholics?
In this light, my favorite foods the ones that make me feel good should be of no surprise. I certainly love foods laden with all of the qualities my body desires.
For cold and gloomy days like today, I require a big, steaming pot of ham and been soup boasting chunky pieces of celery, carrots, and onions.
For bright and shiny days, I simply love prosciutto-wrapped melon balls with a spicy, fruity sangria to wash it down.
For days when I just can't get up and go, a hearty chicken soup with broad egg noodles provides the oomph I seek.
And, on days when I seem to be busy, busy, busy I find myself snacking on whole wheat crackers topped with creamy cheese and fruit. Sometimes I even include turkey bacon which rounds it all out nicely.
When all I want is a big ol' dinner, I make my classic: ooey gooey baked mac and cheese with stuffed peppers and extra red gravy.
But nothing, and I mean nothing is closer to my heart than chocolate. Whether I'm down and out or celebrating a special occasion, chocolate will always make the short list. I love the simplicity of a few pieces of broken chocolate bar. But when nothing but the best is called for, try the All-American Chocolate Cake made by Costco. It boasts three kinds of chocolate, has dense layers of rich cake and is encased in dark chocolate shavings. Sinful bliss is this one!
So, whether you are just plain hungry or craving something special, whether you are going to meet friends or just hanging by the poolside, there are always foods that your taste buds desire. By good measure, the food choices are as varied as you and I. This list is just some of the foods I absolutely love. Feel free to share with me your favorites as well. Whatever you decide, always remember to enjoy!
