Almost everyone that has kept up with anything about the 20008 election has heard Hillary Clinton say that it is She that can beat John McCain in the general election. Meanwhile, whether it's been said or just implied, it's also saying that Barack Obama can't beat John McCain regardless of his popularity.
Obama has hit a note among many young people and especially in those states along each coast. I was shockingly surprised, but happy to see how stongly he beat Hillary in Iowa which is a state made of 98% whites. That's a strong recommendation and shows that his popularity and the country's desire for change has hit people and changed the issue of race.
Being originally from the Southern states, and visiting family and friends since escaping in the 80's I see that racism is still alive and well in the south. I'm sure it is still there in many non-southern states, but it's much more of an issue that's way down on the list of measuring someone's character. To many in the south that is the number 1 issue is measuring some's character. Having been gone for almost 25 years, People around the country seem to think that since most of the country has grown on the issue of race and are celebrating diversity in the work place, schools, and many important venues. Some might say that "oh Georgia has to have changed, they've had a black mayor of Atlanta for many years." While that is true, one must look at the map of the actual city of Atlanta. It's a major city that has a very small and oddly shaped city map. It encloses must of public housing before Section 8 worked to put people in communities instead of in 'Projects'. The actual city of Atlanta has an almost 62% black population, so the election of black mayors is very feasible.
Back to the Hillary beating McCain issue. Unfortunately, I believe she is correct. Once that curtain is closed behind you or you fill in your absentee ballot, I believe we're going to see a change in the presumed winner, any democrat, and in this case Obama into John McCain. McCain, most believe, including myself, don't believe McCain would bring much change to the white house. I'm not sure Obama can even if it is his desire. But I think the forecasting that Hillary can beat McCain is true. I believe that many of those excited democrats are going to feel lost and confused the day after the election and I believe the country is going to wake up and leave the country feeling 'impotent'.
I hope this is not the
