When I was young, my relationship with my dad was not as close as it is now. He used to discipline my brother and me quite a bit. And it didn't help that we were pretty mischievous. So Father's Day wasn't one of the highlights in my childhood.
But as I grew older, I began to understand why my dad always seemed distant, so aloof. Because he and mum were playing good cop and bad cop. No prizes on guessing who's the bad cop. I appreciate what he did, because we learned the meaning of right and wrong, good and bad.
Today, Father's Day had a lot more meaning than when I was a child. Back then, it was the annual obligatory handmade card with rushed scribbling. Now, I take him out for a meal ever year. On top of that, I throw in a gift too.
All dads love being appreciated, and there are endless gifts in the world to show your love and respect of the man who raised you, who took care of you, whom you can rely on in times of need. Here are some suggestions on gift ideas for Father's Day.
Under 20 bucks
You don't need to spend a lot to show your love for your dad. All you need is love, sincerity and a wee bit of creativity. Hand Made Card is the perennial favorite. Even a simple stick figure drawing of you and dad would suffice. Throw in a message too. That might just bring a tear or two to his eyes. A handmade photo frame with a picture of dad and you works just as fine too. As cliche as it may be, but a mug that says "World's greatest dad" is enough to fill dad's heart with joy.
Electronics
Which man doesn't love a gadget or two? Is your dad in need of a new cell phone? Or a new electronic shaver to replace his old and dingy one? It's always good to be able to pamper your dad a little.
Hobby-related gifts
Is your dad a golfer? If so, then grab some clubs and surprise him. Or does he get a kick out of playing chess? Then get him a new chess set to show off his chess skills with.
On him
If you know your dad's taste in clothing, then spoil him, buy him a new jacket, a few new shirts or a nice belt, wallet or even watch. Dads rarely shop for themselves, so it would be nice to get him something new to wear or use.
Camping equipment
Is your dad an outdoorsy person? If he is, get him a new camping tent, a barbeque grill or a grilling tool set. If he likes fishing, buy him a new rod. Better yet, get two, so you can go fishing with him.
Get hearty
The best gift for your dad is for you to spend quality time with him. And you can do so at a meal. So go ahead, bring him to his favorite restaurant and treat him to a hearty meal he deserves.
Wine
It's common for dads to have a preference for wine. So grab a bottle or two of some high quality wine to add to his collection. You can never buy enough good wine.
Events
Do you know a good singer that your dad enjoys listening to? Or an upcoming sporting event you know he'll love? Waste no time and go get the tickets for you and your dad.
All in all, there's no rule as to what to give your dad. If you know him well, you'll know what to get for him. Most importantly, have fun at the task.
