Websites such as Myspace and Bebo.com are a haven for people wishing to socialize either on a friendship basis or whatever the case may be. Unfortunately the younger crowd these days does not seem to have effective character judgement as one of their characteristics so therefore socializing with sorts which he or she would not usually be inclined.
However, there are many instances in which it is just used as a medium to show certain friends your content and hence the reason the websites do have a feature in which to make the profile private. Now, if some parents do not wish to have their childrens profiles to be exposed to everyone then it is their parental duty to understand the systems their kids are using and use the systems feature for protection, rather than shun the idea all together.
One of the main arguments is that young teens could be targeted by sex predators. This is something that cannot be solved by filtering membership and would indeed be violating certain privacy laws checking criminal information. However a teen under 16 who wishes to use the service should indeed privatize the profile, and only show it to certain people they know and trust.
A teen over the age of 17 should be at a stage where they are weary of the people they speak to and indeed by then have some sort of good judgement on character, and yes I do realise that not all judgement is correct. However I must stress the fact that people will socialize regardless, and the internet will be a haven for such things, its up to the parents to protect their children and understand the systems their children use, and its up to the older teens to protect themselves and think twice before engaging in conversation with a total stranger,
Although the whole experience should not be taken in complete caution because I have had the pleasure of using the websites personally and I do believe that they are great services in which I have met good people.
I ask that people be open to the idea and take the proper precaution as you would in any social situation. Certain things should be privatized at times and therefore the features have their purposes, I do believe people should be using them, and in some cases I do see them in use. They odiously would only like to be exposed to a certain group and it is their choice and right to have such a service, perhaps if this feature was not available it would prompt them to not register but that is just a gambit.
