Choosing between Army or civilian life

by Joey Jordan

Created on: June 08, 2008

I had a dream last night. I know it sounds like a really cheesy way to start this article but this isn't a tactic to get me going it's actually the truth. So I had a dream last night, I can't remember it 100% clear but there are small things that I do remember. I rejoined the Military with my old unit because I was looking for Job security. I was wearing the uniform with my old beret on but I couldn't find my regimental belt. I was running around every where looking for someone to borrow me a belt for our first parade. I saw faces from the past, the old Provo corporal screaming at soldiers passing by, stopping soldiers and putting them on show parade at 6 and 10 because they have 1 thread coming out of there button. I ended up in Rob's car. Rob was my closest friend whilst I was serving, God Bless him because he's still in there. Rob was speeding in his car as if we were being chased and I was explaining to him that I could not handle going back to the Military life from Civvie Street and that I had to find a way to get out of there. Then I realised it was me driving and in the realisation I panicked and tried to control the vehicle which in turn made us crash and then BANG.... I woke up.

Is this my subconscious telling me to go back or is it telling me if I stay in civilian life I will crash and burn? I don't know, there are many websites and professionals out there that can probably break down every bit of my dream, analyse it and come up with a complete answer as to what my sub-conscious is trying to tell me, but for me I just see it as a blunt reminder that I don't want to go back to Military life.

I don't see many major differences between Civilian Life and Military Life.

In the military they offer you a good life in the sense of you always have 3 meals a day laid on for you, you always have a bed to go to and if you don't have a bed they teach you how to make your own bed using a shovel and a bit of dirt. You always have your soldier buddies around you to talk to and you can all go down town together and tear the place apart, hoping that the RSM doesn't find out the next morning, otherwise you will be standing in front of him waiting for a choice of his own personal punishment, in which being a swift right hook into the stomach or a 2 week stretch in barrack room jail, which is a hell of a lot worse than a blow to the stomach. Hmmmmm.... Let me think.

Serving in the Military gives you Self Discipline. It gives you the opportunity to be part of a team, to
