Preventing and getting rid of varicose veins

Varicose veins are twisted enlarge veins that are often referred to as spider veins. Spider veins are actually smaller then varicose veins, but the effects are similar. These veins are swollen and create bulges in the skin. Any vein may become varicose, but most often varicose veins are found in the legs and feet.

Causes of varicose veins

The heart pumps oxygenated blood throughout the entire body. Veins carry the low-oxygen blood back to the heart. Since veins have valves that only allow blood to flow one way, blood can only move up the leg. These valves can become weak after time. When this happens, blood leaks back and collect in the vein. If enough blood is collected in one section, the vein can become varicose.

Signs of Varicose Veins

There are several common signs to look for if you think you may have varicose veins. Aching pain in the legs and if your legs get tired easily are signs you may have varicose veins. Swelling and leg numbness are other signs. The most severe signs of varicose veins are darkening of the skin and itching and rashes on the skin.

Preventing varicose veins

Wear sun screen when exposed to the sun. Keep an extra tube of sunscreen in your vehicle since plans can change at a moments notice and you will be prepared.

Exercise on a regular basis putting focus on the legs. Running and walking help increase circulation in the legs.

Try to maintain an ideal weight. If you are overweight your chances of having varicose veins are increased.

Keep your legs elevated as much as possible. Relaxing in your favorite lounge chair can help in your quest to prevent varicose veins.

If you should have to stand or sit for long periods of time, take short walks to increase the circulation in your legs. You should try to walk around every thirty minutes even if just a few feet.

Avoid crossing your legs when sitting. Although considered ladylike, if you cross your legs, your chances of having varicose veins are increased.

Wear clothing that is loosely fit over your waist, groin, or legs. This will allow the blood to flow more constantly.

Add fiber to your daily diet and avoid excessive amounts of salt. Salt causes your body to retain water. A good fiber diet will decrease the chances of constipation. Both of which can cause varicose veins.
