Road trip tales

Every day out here on the road in a big rig is an adventure to be savored and treasured. Each morning when I awake I find myself somewhere different than the day before. Imagine if you will going on a road trip from Buckeye, Arizona that is where we delivered, Buckeye, Arizona is located outside of Phoenix, Arizona on I10. We will be picking up in Nogales, Arizona which is on the Mexican Border, in fact one more street from where we are picking up will put you in Mexico. Nogales is a pretty town on I19: to get to I19 you have to go through Tucson, Arizona. The desert this time of the year is fabulous, since most of the cacti are blooming. The pear cacti bloom has the most delicate red and yellow flowers I have ever seen. The temperature in the desert around Tucson is in the high 90's with a slight breeze.

We leave Nogales, Arizona and go back through Tucson on I10 heading east, we will be stopping in Lordsburg, New Mexico, still in the desert. When we rose in the morning the sun was just coming up over the mountains. We pulled out of Lordsburg, New Mexico and headed toward Amarillo,Texas. We came through White Sands where there is a huge military base and also home to the first missile range in the United States. The pure white sand is gorgeous next to the greenery that is still present. In another month the greenery will begin to turn brown which is typical of the desert areas. Highway 54 in New Mexico is worth seeing, the scenery is beautiful from the desert to the mountains.

Last evening we stopped in Amarillo, Texas, which just happens to have a fantastic restaurant THE BIG TEXAN. The Big Texan is home to the 72 ounce steak, they have one displayed out in the lobby, it looks like a huge pot roast! If you eat the steak, the potato, the salad, and the shrimp cocktail the 72 ounce steak is free otherwise it just cost you $72.00! We have stopped there and saw people attempt this feat I have yet to see anyone do it, although there is a wall of fame of folks who have eaten this monster. The food is excellent some of the best steaks in Texas. The atmosphere is strictly Texan, the gingerbread along the walls with the maroon drapes is a setting out of the old west. The waiters and waitress dress as they did in the wild west. There is a gift shop there that has a resident rattle snake, the one that resides there now is a young rattler, he is not more than a few years old. However he is under lock and key they had one that was an escape artist, they returned him to the wild after he escaped several times. I just had to inquire!

We will be spending the night in Big Cabin, Oklahoma which is on I44. Big Cabin has a great truck stop with very good food. Tomorrow will take us through Joplin, Missouri into Saint Louis, and onto Evansville and our delivery at Whirlpool. Where we will go next is up to dispatch but wherever we go it will be another road adventure.
