Periodontal disease: Symptoms and treatment

Periodontal disease or gum disease is a serious infection that affects the gums and bone that surround the teeth. It starts out in its mildest form as gingivitis. This is when you may notice that your gums are swollen, red, or tend to bleed often when you brush your teeth. Sensitivity to anything cold or hot that touches your teeth and persistent bad breath are also among common symptoms. However, if you choose to ignore what you consider to be a simple case of bad breath, it could lead to periodontitis.

Periodontitis is caused by untreated gingivitis. The bacteria in plaque begin to grow below the gum line and irritate the gums. As a defense, your body will send natural antibiotics to beak down and destroy the tissues and bone that support the teeth. Eventually, your teeth will become loose and have to be removed. However, loosing you teeth may be the least of your worries if the infection spreads throughout your system. Heart disease, respiratory disease, and diabetes are associated with this form of periodontitis.

This is why it is extremely important that you see a periodontist at early signs of the disease. If you do not already have a periodontist ask you dentist to refer to one. A periodontist can treat your disease by scaling and carefully cleaning the root surfaces to remove plaque. However, if the periodonist determines that the tissue around your teeth cannot be repaired, periodontal surgery will be recommended.

You can reduce your risk of periodontal disease with high quality daily oral hygiene and consumption of good antioxidants. The American Academy of Periodontist (AAP) proposes a regular intake of milk, cheese, and yogurt. Research suggests that these dairy products may lower the occurrence of gum diseases.
