Things to consider when choosing a dog

Some dogs can live 15 to 20 years that is, roughly, the amount it takes to raise a child. That's a long time to be responsible for the day-to-day care of any living being. So, before you get a dog, stop for a moment and consider what you really want. There are ten questions that you should ask yourself.

1. Why do you want a dog? Is it because puppies are cute? Or your kid wants one? Even the most well behaved dog takes time, patience and love. She needs to be fed, played with, bathed, walked, and cuddled. She will poop, chew, shed and generally get into mischief. Do you have the patience or the time? Do you WANT the dog? If not, think twice. Dogs have feelings and rejection hurts.

2. Can you reasonably guarantee a dog a home for life? If you're on the move, will the dog be able to come, too? Does your landlord allow animals? If so, is there a size limitation? Big dogs need space to move. If you're living in cramped quarters, you may want to think small. But small dogs can live for a couple of decades. Are you in it for the long haul? If not, reconsider. Losing your home, even for a dog, is traumatic.

3. How do you feel about hair - everywhere? If the idea of a lot of hair on your clothes, furniture and everything else bothers you or if you have allergies, you might want to consider one of the breeds that don't shed like Miniature Schnauzers, Poodles and Bichon Frise. If these breeds don't appeal, consider a short hair breed.

4. Does slobber bother you? If it does, make sure you select a breed that doesn't drool.

5. On the couch potato - energizer bunny scale, where do you fall? Some breeds have a LOT of energy while others love a lap. Match your speed when you pick the pup for you.

6. Do you prefer to spend your time indoors or outdoors? Some dogs love the great outdoors. Some would rather stay in. Pick the dog for your lifestyle.

7. Are you a natural alpha? If you are not naturally dominant, try to pick a dog with an easy going, eager to please personality that is less like to challenge your authority. You are who you are and so are they. Don't make your life more difficult by trying to be otherwise.

8. Do you want to be able to pick up your dog? If so, size matters. How much can you pick up comfortably - now and for the next 20 years?

9. How much money can you afford to spend regularly on your dog? Small dogs eat less, which means less money. The difference can be between 6 cups of food a day and 1/2 cup. It adds up. Consider your finances when selecting a dog.

10. Do you have children or plan to have them? Not all dogs are kid friendly. Some don't get along with children and some are much too likely to be accidently injured by them.

Now, that you know your answers to these questions, you are better prepared to find the right dog for you. There are many books and websites on the various breeds. Do your research and find the one that matches your needs. Even if you just get a mutt from the local shelter, this knowledge will help you make the best choice. Once you've done your soul searching and research, check out your local shelter or go to the AKC website to find a reputable breeder. And, of course, enjoy your new family member!
