often times, and it receives unbiased coverage so consumers aren't skeptical. But how to get the media's attention is the question. I say, do what Thomas Edison did best: create a spectacle. Come up with an outlandish promotion, and let the local media know about it. You can also write a press release about your business if it's doing something newsworthy. Or, doing something charitable or socially conscious often gets positive press coverage.
4. One-to-One marketing. By creating individual relationships with customers you can make great things happen for your company. One way to take advantage of this is by creating incentive based referral programs for your loyal customers. When you do this you're in fact putting your customers to work for you. They're your biggest fans, so they will be your best salespeople, especially if they're rewarded for it.
5. Put your business name everywhere. The more people that see your name means the more people likely to become your clients or customers. Now, a law firm will not go about this the same way that a custom auto shop would. But since we're focusing on the bootstrapping creative-minded entrepreneur, we'll attack this as such.
Some suggestions: put up signs everywhere, drop off business cards and brochures, hang flyers, make T-shirts, plaster business info all over the company's automobiles, give out promotional items with the business name, and so on. In other words, make sure you are so visible that people get sick of seeing your name. Stand in the middle of Time Square with a sign if you have to. Use all the available time you have to get noticed.
6. Work with others. Networking is a great marketing tool and there are so many ways to go about it. You can sponsor an event, you can cross market with other businesses, you can engage in co-branding, and so much more. For example, if you open a health food business, why not link up with a gym for a cross promotional campaign? And don't rule out your competitors either; referral-based networking can turn your competitors into allies. Everybody wins in the world of networking.
7. Think outside the box! This applies to every facet of marketing. Make a continuous attempt to innovate, and encourage creative thinking within the business. Many heads are better than one, so encourage brainstorming and get many perspectives on how to improve marketing tactics as well as business practices.
