CAT TAILS

Long, long ago, when the world was young, there lived a species that thought they were better than everything and everyone.

These cats as they were called, had great pride in their speed and agility. Everyday they'd spout off to one group or the other about how fast they truly were. Heads held high and tails in the air, their bragging never ceased. Even when they weren't telling the mouse, the dogs, or the snake, their very demeanor told their thoughts.

One of the cats was especially obnoxious when it came to expounding his virtues. He was so proud, in fact, that he would continuously challenge all of the creatures of the land to test his speed.

Needless to say this behavior got very old very fast. It got to the point where everyone started to avoid him.

This cat so liked to talk about himself though that he never even noticed the grumbling or avoidance his arrival brought. He just thought more of himself when he saw he was being shunned.
" No one even compares to me or they would speak up and stand their ground, "thought the self-important cat.

This behavior went on with displays of dexterity and purring condemnation until one of the dogs lost his patience with the whole show. This dog gathered up all of his friends and hatched a plan.

A challenge was to be offered to the cat, a race of sorts. Whoever got winded or just couldn't continue on would be proclaimed the other most speedy and agile in the land.

The cat was most shocked by this offer. Didn't everyone already know of his abilities? But, what could the harm be in proving it once again. So he accepted the terms laughingly. Knowing how much fun it would be to show up a dog.

What the cat didn't know was the dogs were so tired of the bigheaded feline that they had set a plan in motion. This plan could not fail. Ten dogs had hid at various lengths upon the course in anticipation of taking over for the last runner. A one way relay to trick the trouble-
making cat. All of the creatures of the land were in on it as well.

The plot was as follows; each animal would take a turn distracting the cat so that he'd be none the wiser. This lesson was going to be the grandest of all. The animals could hardly contain their excitement.

Race day brought all of the inhabitants of the world and a great flurry of anticipation.

The cat started at a break neck speed with the dog close on his heals. When the dog got to the first relay point the cat didn't even notice the exchange he was so intent on his pace. By the time
