For Chevaughn
I've always admired your blackness
your strength, confidence, pride,
courage and undeniable style
And I would always cry
when you sang your soulful songs
and you used my shoulder as a Kleenex
more times than can be counted
but that's cool cause you're my girl
you know I love you
Well, I would compare you to Nikki G. or Aretha,
but that wouldn't do you justice
I've always thought that
Black is Beautiful,
but although there's an edge you possess
you're not above anyone.
You don't need to be
you're you,
and you taught me that's cooler
than anyone you could pretend to be.
Your loud, infectious laughter,
wide smile and crushing hugs
portray a beautiful woman
overflowing
with nothin' but lovin, baby
Thanks for that and a million other things
like being there for me,
understanding me,
backing me up when I needed it
(and when I thought I didn't).
Thank you for your honesty,
for letting me confide in you
(for confiding in me too)
and for never betraying my trust.
Well, I would say you're a princess,
but your not you're a queen.
I respect you, I love you
my sister
my friend

Thin strips of sunlight
Burning passage across the bed.

in grass and clover as bees abound
on petals' vivid hues.

Sitting there
beside you on the warm June pavement
I learned something about you
watching lightning weave stories in trails
between
The wispy waves of o'er,
In time gone back to first
Through trials, famine, loss,
The steadfast ones stand firm

IF WE COULD DO IT OVER
If we could do it over
start again anew
would your ring be on my finger
Would I still be loving you
