Top five movies of all time

time again. Don't worry too much if you don't see the other two films.

2. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Bit of a cheat but I'm going to wrap up all three films in one hit here, after all its all the same story at the end of the day. As a long time fan of the books, I eagerly awaited this film and Peter Jackson didn't put a foot wrong. Almost everything he put on screen fitted with my view of how Middle earth should be, the product of the inclusion of established images, posters, book covers and like that had seeped into the public conscience over the years. The films matched the epic nature of the book and the all-star cast really brought the story to life, except Sean Bean sounding like a Sheffield truck driver again. The New Zealand film locations and the cutting edge CGI combined to do justice to what is arguably the greatest fantasy story ever written.

1. Blade Runner.
Since I first saw this film it has remained my all time favourite. Basically it's a cop movie set in a dark future world. Harrison Ford plays a Blade Runner, a police hit man employed to "retire" androids that have become too human and broken their programming. Having the same sort of cerebral level as the Matrix, only here dealing with the nature of god, mortality and artificial intelligence, again this is a good combination of action, brooding backdrops and message. The contrast of big neon signs, technology and the bustling metropolis with the rain-washed filthy streets and decaying underworld creates a wonderful setting for this film. Anyone whole liked Minority Report or I, Robot should watch this to see where all of the ideas were stolen. Although Harrison Ford claims that it was a miserable experience for him, he has left us with, in my opinion, one of the classics of escapist cinema.

Well that's me done, as you can see pure fantasy, brooding space horror and dark futuristic decay all sum up what appeals to me, like I said its pure escapism, the realities of every day life need to be put on hold now an again and these films provide the ideal hiding place.
